Please heed this man's advice! Man-up and take it to the track!

Very user friendly bike and honestly still more bike then what you need. Go test drive a cbr600rr and tell me its slow. You'll claim its the fastest thing you've ever been on.

P.S. YOUR AN IDIOT IF YOU DON'T INVEST IN NICE GEAR SUCH AS A LEATHER JACKET, HELMET, BOOTS, AND GLOVES Get pants too if you want to save your self some pain, take it from some one who knows what they're talking about. Having the hospital use a sharp utensil to DIG gravel out of your legs and ass is no fun, borderline the worst pain I've ever had. If you buy cloth anything, your still an idiot, cloth does nothing for protection against assfault. I know becuase my hands were tore all to hell and I was wearing cloth gloves. I Would post pics, but it would probably make this thread NWS.

Anyways, like I said go test drive a 600 or a friends 600 and you'll shtt your pants.

It's not if you dump your bike, it's when you dump your bike, it will happen so be prepared!

I think that after reading all this advice I will start off with a Ninja 250 or something along those lines. I am not in any hurry to kill myself so I will start off with something more tame to learn to ride on. Atleast if I really don't like it, I haven't spent a ton of money on the bike.

Look into a Rgv250 or RS250 if you like to turn a wrench .. awsome bikes.

The Ninja 250 certainly is a fantastic bike and gets really good fuel economy.... and it's dirt cheap. But if riding is something you think you might enjoy for the long term I would encourage you to have a look at the SV650 and Ninja 650R. They both have a bit more power, but they're also perfect beginner bikes.

That said, I've actually thought about getting a Ninja 250R for myself, and I've been all the way up and the sportbike ladder. Great fuel economy and it looks like a lot of fun to ride around town.

sv650s is a great bike to learn on if you want something a little larger.

I was in the same boat as the OP when i got my first bike. I really wanted to go out and get a GSX-R 600 off the floor. Having lots of friends that ride and own bike shops they talked me into a used 94' Honda VFR-750 that i got for $2500. This was my best decision ever. It was an amazing bike. Tons of low end torque because of the v-twin so even if you got in trouble, power was there to help. I wouldn't recommend starting on an inline 4. In the end, i ended up wrecking that bike and haven't gotten back on since. Lesson learned, and only cost me $2500. Check craiglist.

IMHO most modern sportbikes 600cc, 750cc, 1000cc's are too much bike for beginners ...but if you must have one get a 600 or 750 AND PLEASE TAKE A COURSE TO LEARN HOW TO RIDE IT. Motorcycle Safety Foundation

Thanks again for the info guys. I went and checked out the YZF-R6 today and will be cross shopping it with the gixxer 750. The 750 feels the best when sitting on it but might be a little too much on the road. However the reading I've done on both bikes says the 750 is more comfortable for around town driving because of better low end plus has a substantially better top end to boot. i also like how the gixxer has electronic throttle mapping like SI-Drive that can be used to limit peak tq/hp while I'm learning.

This decision is really hard but I'm in no hurry. I will be taking a riding course and have already sent in the paperwork. Now I'm just m waiting to hear when they can squeeze me in.

I was quoted a really good insurance rate on a GSX-R 1000 at only $77/month. I bet the 750 is under $70/month. Fincancing 5k won't kill me and I plan on paying it off early so the interest will be marginal....$500 maybe.

Buying a used bike is something I'm considering because I don't want to smash up a new one. On the other hand I feel like I'll respect a new bike more and be less apt to ride like an asshat. Should i be weary of buying a used bike though? I mean kinda like how it'e never a good idea to buy a used STI, does the same apply to bikes?

It matters more with who you buy from.. if its a kid it's best to walk away... not because he beat on it, becuase he most likey did not do the maintenance for cash reasons.

Where are you located? I can have a look on the racer boards as they most all work in shops and can vouch for the oil changes.
