If you actually want to learn how to ride well, start out on a mid sized standard like an SV650, FZ6, or 599.

If you just want something that'll send you to plaid when you twist the throttle back, get a Hayabusa. It's at least a lot easier to ride than a liter supersport bike, even if it is bigger.

If you looking for speed and dominate on turns etc. Get the Triumph Daytona 675

I have a 2003 gsxr1000 and I would love to trade it for a 600. I just have too much money in it. If you ever want to get into riding on a track that doesn't just go straight, anything over a 600 is a hindrance until you are a very experienced track rider. Now if you live where there are no tracks or curves and you are just getting a bike to cruise around on or to "gasp" street race, get what you want. But if you want to ride curves get a smaller bike. I wish I would have went with a sv650s.

my bike:

I bought it new in 2003, I have 27,000 miles on it including 8 or so trackdays, one crash, multiple trips to deals gap "800 mile round trip". I'd have more miles but for the last three years I have had a girlfriend that didn't like me riding. I got rid of her and now I plan on a 10,000 mile riding season.

+1348572535 for a Spaceballs reference, awesome.

Anyway, I would like to say, it's just ludicrous to say a 600 series is "too slow" for you. Don't kid yourself. I can't even ride 70% of what my 05 Kawasaki 636 can do. Second, I also agree with the guys, that you should buy a $2-3k new bike with under 400cc's, like the ninja 250, or buy used bike with under 400cc's and learn how bikes handle first. I thought I was being safe buying a Suzuki SV650 as my first bike, and dropped it once, and crashed it badly with a $4,900 repair bill, (thanks insurance for repairing it ). If I could do it over, I'd def get a ninja 250, I think it's a very sporty bike, and plenty of power to get you through traffic and twisties.

good to see you actaully get out and ride it, i had a 10k mile season on my TL the first year i had it, never got to deals gap on it but i did get there in my car (went with all my motorcycle friends), what an awesome experience, we're going back this year, i also had a buddy that put over 22k miles on his RC51 within a 2 year term

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I just checked out the GSX-R 1000 and 750. The 1000 fits me better but the saleman and everyone I've talked to says the 1000 is A LOT of bike and it's really high strung. I'm leaning toward the 750 right now but will have a better idea of which one I want after getting my license and test driving them both.

Both are way out of your league.

After reading everything, I definately agree. The problem is I don't want to buy something I'll outgrow.

The 1000cc bike is definately out because I know I can't handle it and will get hurt. Everything I've read says it's really hard to tame and the front end will go up really easy.

I'm intimidated by the 750 but think I can learn on it. A friend of mine learned on a CBR954rr or something like that and said it wasn't that bad. I'll probably get a 750 but might end up going with a 600. Once I get my license I'll be able to take out my friends CBR and have a better idea what I want.

Basically I want a fast bike to grow into and I think the 750 is just that. I'm not looking for something to learn on with the intentions of trading up in the future. however, I've never ridden a bike so maybe I'll be afraid of the CBR and want something easier to ride.

Explain ..outgrow. Are you still growing? You find me one street only rider who has "outgrown" a modern 600 and I will give you the keys to one of my bikes. It really makes my cringe hearing that from street riders..

A good rider on a 600 will walk on 95% of the folks with a liter bike. I would stick to a 600 or go exotic(RGV,RS250,NC35). Don't listen to the street crowd as most are clowns.
