The idea of a performance-oriented H4 diesel in an STi is intriguing.
I think just the H4 diesel in a WRX package would be great fun. I personally would like a Forester with a "tweaked H4 diesel" All that utility, plus fuel economy and loads of TQ

For a daily driver of course, now the real fun would still be my STi right next to it in the garage...

Default More Expensive?

Really? up here (Norther Alberta) Diesel is at least 10 cents cheaper a liter than gas. Until the middle of winter, Jan-Feb, then it is more expensive. We get a shortage every year. Which is kinda strange since we got more oil than the Saudi's do now.

I love the idea of a diesel in a subaru, just kinda blew me away when I heard about it. They are far more reliable than gas jobs and the TQ is way cool, just low HP in general, but thats how those motors work. They would be a huge hit up here.

Keep on Riggin

The reason that diesel gets more expensive in the winter and you run into shortages is that refineries shift production from diesel output emphasis to stove oil output emphasis. Since the 2 products are so closely related and refineries never really anticipated diesel would be a primary product their capacities wont support both markets. There are a few refineries that are upping capacity of diesel/jet fuel/stove oil units to keep up with the market. The refinery where I work, just built a new Low Sulfur Diesel unit, completely revamped their jet/diesel/stove oil treater, and they are going to build another completely new diesel unit to replace the current old one. If you think oil companies are sticking it to us on Gas, just remember that it only takes about 1/3 the process to refine diesel.

Default Close But Not Quite.

That may be true down there, but up here. ALL of our houses are heated by natural gas, not stove oil. We have more refineries than you can shake a stick at. The reason is winter is our (oilpatch) really busy time. All + or - 1000 oil rigs, plus all the commerical trucks, and most companies give their employees company trucks and a fuel card so we dont care about saving fuel since we dont pay for it. So just imagine all those 600+hp diesels runing 24h a day for 6 months straight plus pickups, thats alot of diesel being consumed really fast.

I have 168k on my truck and have maybe put $500 of fuel in it, the rest was free from my rig. Sweet deal. I could also get all the free methanol I want.

All I need to do now is find a way to get free 93oct gas.

Keep on Riggin

Actually the GM 5.7L diesel was a beefed up Olds 350. Yep they were crappy diesels, but they can be converted to gas and bored out to make a bulletproof454 cid small block! At least they're good for something!

{DISCLAIMER: My detailed experience is limited to a small corner of the world, but I am led to believe by people with much more experience than me that most markets are very similar to my local market.}

Actually local markets play a very small role in what is produced... I live on the west coast and there are very few houses that are heated with stove oil, but the fact is that a very large portion of the east coast of the US is still stove oil. Thus, most of North America caters to them. You can also thank the US military for diesel shortages as any refinery that has a military contract has to supply them first. Guess what 2 products the military uses... Jet Fuel and Diesel... And since Jet, Stove and Diesel all come from the same process stream, diesel markets get to suffer... I was amazed to find out how little the local market plays in what the local refineries produce.

I didn't know that. I did know that 40% of the US air force fuel reserves are in Edmonton, kinda the heart of our local oil economy, and where most of the refineries are. But still, the amount of Diesel that we use is HUGE. And we are paying .93c a liter X 4.54 l/gal = $4.20 a gal of 87oct and $3.84/gal of Diesel RIGHT NOW! And we get it from our own backyards. CRAZY!!

4.54 is a "Brittish" gallon. A US Gallon is 3.78L

.93 x 3.78 = $3.46
