Saw that. I'm not surprised. I think that was on Dateline Sunday.

Bad news is the rating does not apply to WRX and STi although they have a the same chassis and safety equipment. According to the article on CNN, which mentioned the WRX not getting the rating, perfomance oriented cars are not rated.

Never the less, it's good to be in a safe car.

i think sti will be little weaker than wrx, due to aluminium hood and trunk

I don't think we have aluminum trunk? Otherwise why would ppl upgrade to the Spec C alum trunk? Also having stiffer material doesn't always make the car safer, it's all about energy absorption and deflection.

We don't have an aluminum trunk.

The 06 WRX has the same hood as the STi. Also, the aluminium trunk is on the wrx.

No aluminum trunks on anything USDM! Geez, you'd think nobody ever heard of a magnet.

The last I checked, the old Imprezas were getting four stars (out of five) on both frontal and side crash test ratings by the NHTSA (sp?) and the IHSA gave it a "good pick" or something like that. If the new '06 STI's are getting top safety ratings, that is excellent since that was one of my major concerns with getting this car. Seems like every car these days is getting:

1. A minimum of 6 airbags (2 front, 2 side, 2 curtain) with some cars getting 8 (2 addtional sides for the rear occupants). The STI has 4.

2. Some form of DSC, ESC, or VDC. Meanwhile the STI goes on with SuperABS and EBD only, and really crazy AWD system. Now if only they would add some computerized safety control mechanism on top of all that and have an option to completely disable it.

3. Active head restraints. The STI has those really cool seats (with integrated head rests) kinda similar to the ones in the RX-8. Unfortuantely, this means lower rear crash test scores.

4. And to a lesser degree...higher strength steel found in the '07 Camry and the '06 Jetta, GTI, and GLI.

All of which means cars are getting safer by the day. Still, I've read that the STI is still very safe and may not need any DSC because it handles so well to begin with. Has anyone out there avoided any accidents on acount of the AWD/DCCD systems?
