Default AutoWeek: 2006 WRX and STi, Article added

Sep. 5 AutoWeek has a cool article on the 06s:

"Something to Impreza your friends with"

With shots of the WRX taking a turn WRC style on Pike's Peak, and a nice shot of a WRB STi kicking up dust. I will try to scan it in later, but they give it a lot of praise. A sidenote, they claim the 06 "gets a new tuned exhaust with all four equal length pipes expelling gas out of the combustion chambers", will this mean a cat-back designed for an 05 wont be right for an 06?

Reading the Autoweek article, they claim the '06 STI is equipped with an air pump for emissions. I thought it didn't have one?

Does anyone know if this is true? I love the boxer sound. Hopefully it will not change on '06 models. This is the first time I hear that though. I already drove a 2006 STi and it sounds like a '05 STi.
Anyone who had the chance to take a look underneath a '06 and see if the headers have unequal length like in the '05 STi?
Maybe Esemes?

Can anyone confirm these statements from Autoweek and MotorTrend.

1. New tuned exhaust with 4 equal legnth pipes.
2. "Subaru gave the STI's shifter shorter throws and put carbon-plated synchronizer on fifth and sixth gears."(MotorTrend says that fourth got this also). Did the STI allways have this or is this new for 06'.

These items as far as I have seen have not been discussed or confirmed anywhere.

Anyone know?

No word from any other sources on the equal length headers; I personally think it is either something the 2.5L WRX motor got, or it is just bunkum.

The WRX (not STi) 5-speed got shorter throws and a beefed up 1st gear synchro, according to Subaru. (The WRX got a whole slew of upgrades and enhancements for '06, including two new trim levels.)

The STi got carbon-coated synchros for 4th, 5th and 6th gears according to several media sources, but I haven't found anything official yet.

Thanks for the reply and I hope someone can find out if these 2 statements are true. As you can see by the Autoweek quote they specifically say the STI got shorter throws and 4-6 gears are changed.

OK who will find out the truth.

thx

I heard from another source that the equal length headers appear on the normally aspirated 2.5L motors, not on the turbos.

You're correct-only the NA 2.5's get the equal length headers. This was discussed on another thread.

2006 STi has even or uneven headers?
