Default STi wins Bang For Your Buck award by MOTOR magazine in Australia!

Every year MOTOR magazine in Australia hold their bang for your buck award. As the title says... This years winner is the Subaru Impreza WRX STi. Australia is still only the 2.0ltr with the "euro spec" 265hp so I think that is an awesome result. Here is a small write up on it from subaru.com.au

My copy of the magazine should be in the mail this week. Can not wait to read the article.

Mensioned on that SOAU page The STi was the fastest around Wakefield Race Track in New South Wales with a time of 1min 10.12 seconds. For a comparison the Australian V8 Supercar lap record is 1'00.05" around that track. So only being 10 seconds behind a 600hp race prepped V8 is awesome!
Not mensioned on that page is 0-100km/h and 400m times (0-62mph and ¼ mile) which were 5.53 and 13.71@159.7km/h (99.2mph)

I wonder what the sudden improvement is? Is it all down to the DCDD? Because the year before Motor was full of praise for the Evo and the STi was seen as the poor handling cousin. I've learnt not to trust those mags. I only believe what I've experienced for myself!

I havent read the article myself, but from what I read on Subaru.com.au and from what friends have told me it is the new DCCD set up plus the STi now wears RE070's in Aust too which are much stickier then the previous model STi's shoes (shoot me, I forgot what they were...)

Also remember. This is BFYB. The EVO is nearly $7k more expensive then the STi in Aust. So the Subaru gets the nod in the price part of it.

Just got the mag, great result!

I won't spoil it for you eatV8, but they give much praise to the STi's DCCD, RE070's and Brembo's.

A great caption, 'Evolution is the drift prince to the STi's drift god status.'
On the next page, there's a sweet picture of an STi hanging its arse out.

Yeah, I also purchased the magazine after hearing from eatv8 that STi won bang for your bucks. I just finished buying that same model. The DCCD did really improve the understeer.

Well that's a pretty amazing turn around. Now the next question I have is why is it that none of the reviewers here in the states ever picks the 2.5l STi which has more power and the same DCDD over an Evo? Like I say I put about as much reliance in car reviewers as I do in car salesman.

Note that I much prefer the Sube myself and it makes my feel warm in my happy place to see a Sube do over an Evo for once. Just seems very unusual to me. Sort of like the bug eye winning car of the year when it came out even though the design was pretty much universally disliked by buyers. "Let's help Subaru out" anyone?

What was the difference in lap times? Be interesting to see what would happen if you put the Evo on RE-70s.

Wow. A 2 second improvement with the DCDD and the all but race tires. Amazing.

Actually the most amazing thing is that in 04 the STi was only half a second quicker around the track than the normal WRX. Gah! That's pretty bad.

Remember the Aussie WRX has factory 17's and 4 pot brakes... Also doesnt wear those pathetic RE92's either! Also remember what I wrote about the Aussie STi being 265hp and WRX being 227hp

I got the magazine in the mail today. Not a bad issue. Some big suprises in how some cars performed in BFYB

I know all that (I'm an aussie ...the power diff is 168kW vs 195kW in real units). Still it seems pretty poor when you pay an extra 10k+ back home and get a measly half a second over the bog standard rex, plus the extra lag associated with the STi.

I'm hoping they go ahead and release the 2.5l STi back home as well. Although I won't be surprised if they find some excuse for keeping it as a 2.0l.
