Unhappy Official USDM 2006 Impreza information released

OK, maybe not a sad face for everyone, but it sure the hell is for me. Check out all the info at nabisco, but in short, the STi gets no extra power, and some different gear ratios... guess its an 05 for me then. Atleast the WRX owners will be happy. *goes in the corner and cries*

So would the new gear ratios make the new STi alot faster?
Now I know for sure that I`ll get an 05.

Well I paid my $35.

There is a service page for a rear diffuser. As far as I can tell it's a piece of plastic with fins that bolts on to the undercarriage in front of the rear bumper.

I could not find any service page for the second rear wing shown on the pics from that Japanese auto show, so the US model is probably not going to have it.

No indication of STi wing being optional - not listed under optional equipment technical pages.

There is a service page showing a rear wiper on a sedan, but it doesn't indicate which impreza models get it.

Here are the curb weights for 2005 and 2006 STi in pounds - both sets of data are from the factory service manuals:

2005
-----
front: 1,920 (58.2%)
rear: 1,378 (41.8%)
total: 3,298

2006
------
front: 1,953 (58.3%)
rear: 1,398 (41.7%)
total: 3,351

So the 2006 STi has gained 53 lbs.

I'm suprised that anyone is suprised by the lack of mechanical changes. It was quite clear that this was just a brief face lift to introduce the new corporate snout and that any significant mechanical changes and platform changes would be at least 1 more model year away. I said before that the STi would remain largely unchanged, and I also said that the WRX would *not* get a big HP bump into STi/Evo-ish territory. The 2.5 in the WRX is just for low end torque.

I'm interested to see plots of the new STi gear ratios compared to the 04/05 ratios.

Thanks for the info.

53 lb is a LOT of weight.. I think side airbags attribute to some of it.. I wonder what other 50 lb are..

Some of it is the new rear diffuser and likely some is the rear wiper/motor. Also the new front grill and headlights my be a few pounds heavier.

I thought the STi has always had side airbags... rear wiper would be cool... wow an 05 - 06 decision will be hard.. guess Subie could still have a few surprises for us up their sleeve with little things.

Someone should start a page like this for the STi, cataloging weights of parts:

http://rennlight.com/

That is a pretty cool website but, you guys beetch about a 53lb increase... go work out and lose some weight yourself :P Plus, I dont care how much of a car fanatic you are, 53 lbs really doesnt matter! If it was 200 or 300 lbs, sure I can see making a big deal about it, but 53, who cares! Go get an Evo RS! The worst was subaru not putting in a stereo to save weight the first model year... that went down well. /end lighthearted rant :P

Yes, definitely lose 53 pounds if needed.

53/3351*100 = 1.6% slower

Of course there are other issues in terms of distribution, but you are accelerating 53 lbs more than last year with the same horsepower/torque. When it comes to peformance the ratio of weight/hp is extremely important (lower is better):

http://rennlight.com/light/perf.html

2005 STI: weight/hp = 11.0
2006 STI: weight/hp = 11.2

For comparison:

02 BMW M3 = 10.1
Dodge Viper GT2 = 7.5
Toyota Supra Turbo = 11.0
'73 Carrera 2.7 RS = 10.2 (2145 lbs)

I took 30 lbs out of my 911 and it made a noticable difference in both straight line performance and cornering.
