Default 2005 STi vs. 2005 GTO comparo at Edmunds.com!

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...icleId=105773#

STi won, what a surprise .

I do find it interesting they are comparing such different cars; something different than the normal (yet always intriguing) STi vs Evo comparison. I am at the point where Im deciding between a Mustang GT, a GTO, and an STi, so while some people may wonder "why the heck would anybody even WANT to compare a RWD 400hp musclecar to an AWD sedan," Im guessing there are a fair share of people out there who are cross-shopping them like I am. Anyways its a good article pointing out the strengths and flaws of each. I especially like there refering to it as a "modern day GTO," since if you think about that, it really is exactly that. They did only get 5.8 to 60 though and called the STi's interior better than the new GTOs .

Also they didnt touch on Safety... you can't even get the GTO with side airbags, but I dont think the goat has even been crash tested in the U.S. yet?

Eh my buddy has an 05 and its nothing special in my opinion. Stock for stock the STi should win the 1/4 race with the same drivers. I will admit the top end of those things (or any LS motor for that matter) is extremely impressive. However I just have a couple mods (exhaust and ap) and I easily put 2 cars on my buddys 05 and manage to keep the lead in the top end. A bone stock sti as we all know well defenitely lose its edge over 100mph.

Great comparison and review, but there driving skills must be less then perfect. 0-60 in 5.8 seconds in an STi? They must need to work on there launch a bit more... must be forgetting it's AWD. Not to mention the 14 second 1/4 mile time for the GTO... not too good when it can run a lot quicker.

interesting article.. but they messed up their 0-60 times... they have written as 5.7...!! off by a second and some. and they did it in their last table comparison too. i'm starting to think they did it on purpose!!!!!!

edit: yea we submitted that at the same time.... ehhh

If you guys had to get an Automatic tranny car, all safety issues aside, would the GTO not be near the top of the list?

The GTO auto is readily available, it comes that way stock. The 6 speed is an option for the car... so it is much easier to obtain in auto.

If you're going to get a performance car you might as well get a manual. Hammering the gas pedal down with no shifting required can get very old and boring. Plus you gotta be able to rev it up to hear that sweet exhaust note.

They said that the rear wheels were wider for '05...I thought ALL the wheels are now 17x8 on the '05 STis?

While I agree their 0-60 and 1/4 mile seem a little slow for both cars, even by "enthusiast" driving standards (i.e. better than average but not quite pro), what is nice about this is that it is representative of how most people will drive these cars. Not everyone can nail a 13 flat @ 103-104 in the STi. Not everyone is going to drag a GTO to 13s on street tires. These results, while not overly impressive to us, are probably more representative of the performance the average-Joe can squeeze out of the car.

I think a lot of people fall into the trap of assuming that just because Car & Driver ran 13.1 @ 104 and 70mph through the slalom for car X that they can do the same just by buying car X.

Edit: After reading the spec sheet at the end of the article I must admit 14.1 @ 97 mph seems a tad low as well as only 102 mph for the GTO. I've read those things are beasts on the top-end and can easy pull 106+mph. I still firmly believe that not everyone can produce magazine results but these guys might need a few lessons...or a better track.

Interesting article & I liked the video. The goat has always been one of my favorite muscle cars, along with cars like the Plymouth Road Runner, Super Bee, Javlin, Cougar, and Chevelle SS 396's

I think of my STi as a modern day muscle car with a passport from Japan
