Default '06 WRX spotted?

While doing a track day at Summit Point this weekend, a black WRX cruised the paddock and the driver waved to myself and another Suby driver. I thought the car was a little odd.

It had:
- NJ manufacturer plates
- STI hood scoop
- STI muffler
- WRX wheels

Do you think this might have been a 2.5l WRX making the rounds? SCCA had a race on the big track, and COM was running a time trial event at the Shenandoah circuit, Subys participating in both. I don't know why SoA would have a 'modded' car driving around, and you can't fit WRX wheels on an STI, so it leads me to think it was a WRX.

You can get these options installed to a WRX.

I don't think that Subaru would want to send a pre-production '06 WRX test car (or however they call them) on a truck day with all the people there starring at it. They want to keep it secret until the official release of the model. So, most likely what you saw was a modded WRX.

So why would the car have manufacturer plates on it? Why would SoA 'mod' a WRX?

Are you even sure they were manufacturer plates? Secondly, could be someone that works for SoA and they happen to own a modded Suby. Seems way more likely than a 2.5 WRX, especially because the WRX will NOT have the STi wing. Also the exhaust is identical between the STi and WRX, and the scoop on the 04/05 WRX is close enough in size to the STi scoop to confuse them.

Really? I know the stock STi has one big exhaust, and I thought the stock WRX has two side-by-side little ones. I could be wrong, though. Umm... We are talking about the last piece of the exhaust that sticks out the back and you can see, right?

I never said the car had an STI wing; just a hood scoop and the exhaust (what's visible, anyways, which is the muffler and tip). I have an STI, and was two feet away from it when the guy drove by. The hood scoop was identical to mine. They were definitely manufacturer plates. I've competed against Dodge factory cars often enough to identify them.

So if it had manufacturer plates, it wasn't a personal vehicle. It had WRX wheels and seats, so it wasn't a wingless STI. Maybe it wasn't an 06 ( I could give a **** it it was or wasn't, I'm just curious as to why the car might be equipped as it was), but at the least it wasn't a normally equipped WRX.

In 2005 the regular WRX got a single tip muffler very much like the STi piece. In 2002-2004 it was a twin tip.

Both of those can easily be mistaken as STi parts while they are more than likely stock WRX stuff. Like I said, the 04/05 WRX has a scoop that is very similar in size to the STi scoop. So if you saw it at a glance...
The exhaust tip on the 05 also is a large single tip like the STi.

Seems like it could still most definitley be a bone stock 2005 WRX.
