What it looks like to me is that they are trying to bumb the Jetta to the Passat class and the Passat to the 50-60000 range to keep up with the likes of BMW. But I am in no way a marketing major (or spelling for that matter). Just my $.02

I'm a sucker for hatchbacks too. Love the ability to make home depot runs with everything inside AND it weighs less than a sedan. Best of all worlds.

the bad thing about hatchabcks is chassis stiffness (a big open box doesn't have as much rigidity) and the Cg is higher. than an equal sized sedan/coupe.

and come on, Subaru still doesn't have the cash to launch another platform and it doesn't fit the more upscale segments that their 5 year plan is targeted on.

Subaru will bring this out. The car is already majorly into development. Remember GM/Saab paid alot of $$ towards the Tribeca since they will be sharing it. Just because it is a hatchback doesn't mean it can not be "upscale" Audi, Alfa Romeo both premium/luxury brands and have hatchbacks.

care to share your information source on this? I am basing my info on the 2004 Subaru annual report. http://www.fhi.co.jp/fina/english/report/pdf/ar/04.pdf Check page 8 specifically where they speak about near term plans with no mention of a hatchback and no indication of a hatchback in the lineup graphic that contains SUV silhouettes but no hatchbacks other than the existing minicars from Japan. Also in the FDR-1 strategy there is mention of developing a new platform (Tribeca) not multiple platforms. FDR-1

I just don't see any indication of a hatch, not even any of the concept cars have been hatches. The more likely next platform might be along the lines of the B9 roadster, even though they now have used the B9 designation for the Tribeca. I could be wrong, but only the Japanese photoshop mags are shoing anything hatch like from Subaru. Please share any data that you know.

I have no internet links. I read this in a magazine article where they had an interview with the head of Subaru Australia. I speak with two people within Subaru Australia also who have been mensioning a hatchback. We will just have to wait and see. I can not prove nothing to you and I dont expect you to take my word for it. Just remember when it comes out who was talking about it :P

I personally love hatchbacks. The four cars I owned prior to my STi were all hatchbacks. But you know why I bought the STi? Because it has 4 doors! A new baby in the family makes a 2-door car just an impossibility. So, the need for 4 doors was what got me to buy the STi in the first place -- otherwise, I was happy with the car I already had.

If Subaru goes hatchback on the Impreza line, I hope to heck they offer a 4-door STi, or else I'm going to have to keep my '05 in top running condition for a loooong time.

Beyond that, $35K for a 2-door hatchback sounds like a pretty tough sell to me. At least with 4 doors, guys can claim "hey, it's a family car, too!" :-)

Art, I told you nothing about the NY show. You were trying to guess what it was and come to the belief you got it out of me what it was All it was is the Forester redesign and 230hp bump and the NA engines getting AVCS. Not whatever you are thinking it was... If I remember you thought Legacy with 275hp or something?
Like I said before you included. I do not care if anyone believes me or not, at least now I can go back to these posts WHEN it comes out. I do not want to debate this with anyone. I know what I know and do not care who listens or not.

Someone told me hatches have have higher center of gravity and are not as structurally strong as sedan or coupes.. Is it true?
