rookie question: how do you make big torque; i.e. how would you change our engine to make that kinda torque? change the bore&stroke? those car are "only" 2.0l. amazing machines.

Yeah. They go no-holds on the WRC. They build the STi for us to hold up to the warranty and to mass-produce. They only make 40 or so per year of the WRC cars. Not concerned about how much CRAZY hp/tq #'s.

Well, they do it with an engine that can last (barely) one race and doesn't need to meet the emissions or noise regulations that we have to meet. Although, fun enough, the WRC cars are actually registered for road use in Europe (they drive on normal roads in between stages).

Several million dollars in R&D does wonders for your torque output.

You do know that the reason the WRC engine is limited to 300 HP is that there are regulations? There is an air restrictor that limits the volume or air to the engine. If they were unrestriced you would see in excess of 500 HP. Go back to about 83 or so with the Group B cars to see what happens without restriction.

the hyundai accent wrc3 has 300 hp and 384 ft lb torque... manages a
0-60 of 3.9 seconds (according to rally xs magazine)
now, subaru wrc has 300 hp but 434 ft lb torque... that should mean a better 0-60 although i dont knwo what it is... anyone know?

Best Car mag (12/26 ed.) fm. JPN. and it mentions of the following keypoints.

- Launch date: probably April '04, that's 2mos. later than the
anticipated Mitsu Evo8.5 MR (Al. roof).

- Rear wing: similar in apperance to the actual Rally Car except they
reduced the FINS (wing splitter) fm. 4 -> 2.
(sori dnt have scanner).

- Power Ratings: Evo MR STi8 STi (WR look alike).
* ps/rpm: 280/6500 280 280/6000
kgm/rpm: 40.8/3600 40.2 41.0/4500
[achieved by revised ECU]

- Tire size up: still 17" though. 235/45 R17. with improved hub-carrier
strength / rigidity.

- Revised suspension tuning.

- Revised front bumper (downward extension) for better aerodynamics

- No mention of Roll Cage

- and lastly Subaru promises even better handling than the orig 22B.

Note: '*' power are seriously underrated. actual 300+

Default ADVAN RC2s

In a magazine article I have here, it says how because this is a car "tuned" by STi they dont have to keep to the 206kw(280ps) agreement rating... All the companies that have tuning arms (NISMO, RALLIART, TRD etc) are exempt from this power cap now as they are "tuning companies" not the manufactuer. However, the article says that the car should share the S202's powerplant which was rated at 235kw(320ps)

It's only 300hp because of race restrictions and the engine's lower-end tuning for ralley situations. 300 isn't a ludicrous number, and with the extra weight of the street car, why NOT make it more powerful than the WRC car?

The WRC cars are HP restricted but they pump in the 500lb/ft range torquewise. How satisfying would that be in the showroom car...

So,

Lets get technical, how the heck do they get that awesome amount of torue, then restrict the horsepower back down to the 300hp limit?

Is it like restricter plates in nascar? If so, how do they manage the gobs of torque while removing the hp?

I know they do have turbo inlet restrictors... maybe they have a special wastegate or something ...
