Diesel Impreza / STI?

Hey all,
Not sure if this has been mentioned or not but:
Engine Technology International - "has learned that Subaru is planning a boxer diesel derivative to the much-loved Impreza model. According to insiders the diesel Imreza will likely come on the market by the end of the year. But it's thought a boxer diesel Impreza STA is also under development, with the new boxer unit being tweaked to deliver the best part of 180bhp and a further 400Nm of torque - some 50Nm more than the gasoline STI. On the road, that will translate to a plus 150mph top speed, while ensuring fuel consumption of around 40mph on combined mode."

According to the article the boxer diesel they are planning for the outback and legacy has the following specs:
1998cc
150bhp @ 3600 rpm
265 lb.ft (360Nm) @ 1800 rpm

25:1 compression ratio + boxer engine = one cool exhaust note. Can’t sneak around the neighborhood now…

180HP STI? Highly doubt it.

I'd say it will be an Impreza xxx, but not STI

Imprezza TDI. The T is for Torque. As far as an STI diesel, I think it unlikely even in the era when Peugeot and Audi both campaign successful Diesel race teams in Le Mans.

I think it makes good business sense for Subaru to develop this for several reasons:

a.) the evo wouldn't be able to compete
b.) they would sell more cars, i mean how many of us wouldn't mind getting better mpg?c.) more torque = good
d.) i might have misquoted the power numbers. I would imagine it would have similar hp to current STI models (~300hp or so).

If it had similar hp/tq (well actually, higher tq obviously) numbers to gas STi's...and promised close to the same amount of "tunability" as gas STi's, well, I'd buy one in a split second. But, I don't think we'll ever see a diesel STi...at least not for 10 years+ I'd predict. Diesel Impreza, maybe, but no STi that I can imagine...

I hope some sort of Impreza TDi comes up, really hoping for a sporty or even STi edition.
I'd get that.. STi drinks too much gas these days..
