Interesting, but it would need to be quicker to really appeal to the performance enthusiasts unless of course the price tag is much, much lower.

Wonder if this diesel powerplant could be easily modded to make it faster? When I say easily I mean like the motor we have now. Lets say making it stg2 and getting the 0-60 down to mid 5's and the 1/4 mile high 13's. 45 mpg and that kind of performance would be very very attractive.

diesels have great power potential. which has a correlation to fuel mileage as well. so bye bye 45 mpg.

some guys with the dodge cummins diesel turbo charged engine are running 11-12 1/4 mile times. Launching in 3rd gear!!

plus they last forever, they would be higher priced probably.

If they could eek out about 70 more hp, OR cut the weight by about 500 pds I would certainly be in that boat after I pay this one off.

Eeking out 70 more hp would mean eeking out about 120ft-lbs more torque, which is no small amount.

I like diesels but don't think they're appropriate for a sports car due to their inherently low-revving, torque-drops-as-revs-raise nature. I think it'd be great if the base Impreza or Legacy went diesel.

Not true, diesels with more power do not necessarily get less mileage. Its about how much your foot stays in it. I had a highly modified Jetta TDI, and I actually got better highway fuel mileage than it did stock. Diesels and Gasoline engines are very different than diesels

I'm pretty sure that if you increase the boost and remap the computer your gonna get horsepower out of it. Adding Propane fumigation apparently helps with power and mileage. Running B100 and getting 250 hp or better would be a dream come true for me.

Banks is working on a Duramax based motor that revs to 7k+.

this will appeal more to the european market where gas prices there are completely ridiculous. we probably wont even see it here by the mere fact that it wouldnt be of any interest to enthusiasts and that americans usually dont tend to use diesel-powered cars. if subaru does actually decide to produce it then it will market only in europe most likely where there priority is economical before performance (and 0-60 in 7 seconds for a diesel would be attractive to them)

subaru should look into an ethanol-powered sti for an alternative means rather than diesel. ethanol could actually produce more HP while still providing for at least 40+mpg. its like racing alcohol fuel. hah, maybe this is something i'll go into subaru to discuss once i get my degree in engineering as im planning to study the ethnaol use as their primary fuel consumption in Brazil

If Mitsubishi can pump 204 bhp and 311 lbs-ft from their experimental turbo diesel, I'm sure Subaru can do much better than......excuse me..... 148 bhp, otherwise they might just not even try to sell the car.
