I went to Italy in 2002 (before there were speed limits on the autostrades) and rented an Opel turbo diesel. It only had about 2 litres of displacement, but it was fast as hell, and easily cruised at 180-190 kph. Nice car.

I like diesels but don't think they're appropriate for a sports car due to their inherently low-revving, torque-drops-as-revs-raise nature. I think it'd be great if the base Impreza or Legacy went diesel.
Tell that to Audi.

One of the things I really like about my Subarus (I have two) is the torque. I'm a torque junkie. The thought of a torque-laden Subie diesel gives me a woody. A hot rod diesel Subie, with or without an STi moniker, sounds to me like hawtness incarnate.

And will you please stop calling the STi a sports car! Sports cars have two doors, two seats, and a soft top.

The best place to start is to reduce the consumption. Foreign oil is a reality caused by consuming more than you produce. The US is the third largest producer of oil bbl/day. Your suggestion about making a deal with Canadian Oilsands producers
is still relying on a foreign oil supply. I work in the processing end of the industry. The oil in the Tarsands requires much more refining than the oil from the middle east. They have to used extremely high process pressures and very high temperatures to extract the oil from the sand. Think about moving a sand slurry inside a pipeline at 2000Psi...very, very expensive solutions. We ran a test valve on a coker after the competitions' valve eroded in 15 minutes. These valves are well north of $250k each and get replaced every couple months. In the middle east, they pretty much pump it into ships...lower production costs-higher profit margins.
