Who didn't see this coming?

Hopefully if Subaru makes AWD optional, the base model will be RWD. But for that to work, they're going to need to lose a little weight over the front axle by pushing the front wheels forward.

I don't see why the boxer engine would be inherently inefficient with fuel, though. It could use direct injection, but that's all.

WTF?!? AWD & boxer engines are what make a Subaru, a Subaru. It's a part of their heritage.

I highly doubt subaru is going to make the boxer engine optional. They just spent all that time and money developing the first ever boxer diesel engine instead of just buying the design from another car........so that just wouldn't sound logical.
Part of their heritage, sure.
More important than heritage when you're trying to make money is what it offers. Safety being a big one.

AWD? Well, if they want to start selling cars to the same people and on the same scale as Toyota/honda, then they definitely need to ditch the AWD. It's a few thousand $ extra that most people don't need. I'm pretty sure that SOA is in business because of places like Vermont and Colorado. Small number of cars overall, but I guarantee you Subaru will never go out of business as long as they keep their standard inclement weather/terrain features. I went to college in vermont and I swear almost every driveway has either a forester or outback.

I find Subaru to be like my alma mater. A small institution with proud heritage, being run by complete idiots, trying to grow out of its self and into a bigger institution while keeping those same values/characteristics yet perverting them in the process(ala 08 STI). Ain't gonna happen.

Subaru will stay in business as long as they keep doing what they've been doing. They really don't have competition within their niche, which isn't going away until the sun gets too close to the earth. When they try and venture out into the world of Toyota, Honda, and yes, Hyundai(2006+ cars are fantastic deals when brand new), then I think they're playing a dangerous game in an already crowded market.

The no-boxer thing doesn't really surprise me since a while back the WRC was thinking of mandating inline-4's. I'm not sure where that decision ended up, but maybe this is a reaction to that. If they do offer optional 2wd and inline engines for the same car, I find it hard to believe they could do so on the same platform.

What the hell that will kill SUBARU! The boxer engine + all wheel drive =Subaru! If they got rid of that they might just end up like ford.

if they got rid of their AWD and Boxer engine in order to compete with honda/toyota, honestly, I would buy a honda or toyota. I bought my subaru BECAUSE of the boxer engine and AWD.

In japan subaru has plenty of FWD Boxer models.

1.5i ftw!

they also have inline 4 cylinder vehicles such as the R1, R2 and Stella.

I'd rock an R1 or an R2 in a heartbeat.

Hell, I'd rock a Stella!!

I pray subaru brings over some of these smaller cars with the sub compacts.

the Impreza/STi wont get rid of the boxer anytime soon, don't worry there.

BRING OVER THE R1 or R2!!!
