I'm not going to begin to claim the 135i is "competitive" vs. the new M3; however, tell him to drive both - the 1er can definitely hold its own (within reason). Since he's a fan of modding cars, he owes it to himself to drive the 135i since it's more mod-friendly and easier on the pocketbook. Also, if he's thinking about an E46 M3 and not the new one, again, tell him to drive both...

And I concur, GO WINGS!

E46 M3 looks wayy cooler than a 135i hands down.

I guess I care less about absolute performance and a bit more on how it looks, feels, and handles.

on another note, my CD changer decided to go on a Failboat cruise. Anyone know how long those cruises usually are? hopefully only a week or so.

You're under warranty, silly. Get it fixed/replaced for free.

And supposedly with a professional driver (Tommy Kendal?) Car and Driver was able to get one to orbit Grattan only 2 seconds a lap slower than my amature self in my daily driver STI.

So yeah,...it's really kinda sorta failrly fast,..sorta.

I think I'd take the 335 and put the flash in it.

I'd really like the 335i coupe,...with no sunroof. But I hear it is way down on performnace from the 135.

You're talking the M3, correct? Also, is that lap vs. a lap you've made with your car in its current state?

Concerning the 335i vs. 135i, obviously weight always plays a role and eventually a vehicle will succumb to that attribute (that is, unless it wears a GT-R badge ). The nice thing is, the weight distribution is pretty much perfect on both cars, but 335i is a couple hundred pounds heavier. The brakes on the 135i are definitely pretty insane and while I haven't seen #s, I'd assume the 135i has a pretty large stopping advantage. I personally haven't yet fully utilized these babies, but I'm guessing the stock runflats would beg for mercy under heavy braking...

Teh hotness:

Another plus for the 335i is being able to use the back seat. Obviously having it be functional would be nice at times; however, I don't mind NOT hauling friends around either.

That's what I hear. 2008 M3. Should be in an upcomming mag. Comparo I hear, vs a couple other cars.

No, not in my cars' current state. Last fall I was doing low 1:30 laps. The track was supposed to be slower than usual as it had just been re-paved 2 days earlier. Guys in Vettes were saying they were 2 sec slower than before the re-paving.

I was there last week again,..but it was wet. Best time (of the 3 that were timed) was a 1:31.21

I won't get a chance to really see what it can do on street tires now, because I just ordered replacements for the now cashed-out REO1R's,..and they're Nito NT-01's (100 treadwear). So I should be able to shave 2 sec off a lap. Probably high 1:27 to low 1:28 on a good dry day.

I hear the new M3 was able to pull off mid 1:32's We'll wait to see it that's true. Can't find anything about the new M3 at Grattan on Google.

The 135 is definately the class of the BMW field.

Sure would be nice to find a way to shave a couple hunderd lbs off the nose. It bugs me unnecessarilly that there is a 300 lb ballast weight in the rear for ballance. I would be up nights trying to figure out how to remove stuff from the front and move it to the back.

Still,...I'm looking forward to my track test drive in your car.

I'm back and forth about the ballast. In my opinion, this is sort of a hack solution, but if BMW decided to engineer the car this way it was without a doubt the best solution available to them. Could it be removed and could someone else find a better way to balance out the car? Possibly, but given certain requirements that they probably had when designing the car and not wanting to sacrifice other vehicle dynamics they needed to do what was necessary... So I guess I can deal. But I know what you're saying.

I guess the only issue I'll run in to with getting the car to the track is that my summer is SWAMPED with busy weekends. Hit me with your current list of events and I'll see if I can't make it out to 1 or 2 of them.

Waterford has a day this weekend (full), July 6th (a Sunday, online registration is open), and October 12th (again, online registration is open). I know there's a 3Balls event at Grattan in July, also, but I don't know when exactly. Stu would know.

I'd probably be more inclined to go to Grattan, but I won't rule out Waterford either.

Stu, chime in if you have a second, please.

Grattan is the most fun you can have..... (pants on or off in my opinion)

I'm registered for a day with 3 balls @ Grattan on July 26.
They're also doing a June 20,..but I won't be in town.

I'll be at Waterford this Sat with Chris and Scott of course.

There's a time-trials at Waterford Hills with the Corvette Club on July 4th. $45,...and if you're familiar with the track you can kick some major ass. I didn't even get to do my 3rd and final run (only my 2 setup runs) and I still beat the other cars in my class by 5-10 seconds. 3rd overall behind 2 Vette race cars on slicks that cheated. (I'll not let that happen again this year,...gotta represent for the Subbys.)
http://www.corvetteclubmi.com/images/2008/Waterford08[1].pdf

I suggest Chris and Scott do that one. You guys would easilly be the top 2, or 2 or the top 3 there in your class. I'd be in a differernt class this year. They'll use standard aurtocross classes. They call it an autocross, but really it's a time trial. You start off in the pit lane,....run the standard track except for a slalom before Big-Bend. Then finish 2/3 of the way through Swamp turn. Then pull in the pitts.

Not sure what AROC is doing. Their site is down. Someone said it got hacked. arocdetroit.org
They're a blast to run with. Very casual. They have been posting some stuff about their autocrosses at belle Isle on the DCSSC site. May have stuff there about track days.

Can't do the time trial. I have family in town through the 4th.

I'll register of the 3Balls thing later, unless you think it'll fill up fast.

I hope tomorrow isn't going to be as hot as it is today. We should try to get there early and get the spots under the tree unless one of you has one of those tents to put up.
