Fun, wish I could have made it for the ride along and to hang out. It was a busy day though, and I just got to Chicago (8:40 pm!).

How are the 615s holding up?

Very well as far as I can tell. Scott seems to think I've got another trackday and maybe spring on them. I think I'll likely go ahead and buy replacements this winter anyway (because they're cheaper during winter) and maybe sell the Falkens off before my next trackday. That'll be April or May, and I'd guess they'll be close to clicks by then and some autocrosser would gladly pay $200 for a set of four in that size.

I might make to the green group, which is the middle of the five rungroups. Yellow was kind of slow. You missed the last run. It was in the rain.

Sketchy!

UPDATE ON SHIFTER RATTLE:

Since I'm pretty sure of what it is, I think fixing it is a simple matter of removing the shifter, taping the cable (a la lackskill) and reinstalling. I was going to do it this afternoon, but today is payday and I have to get some groceries. My kitchen is tapped out. No food = Boony.

If it's nice Tuesday or Wednesday, I'll handle it then.

I thought you thought it was the reverse ring puller thingie? I had the same problem. Anyways, if your fix above doesn't work, get some sticker backing and slip it inbetween the shift laver and the reverse ring and secure it with a drop of super glue. Make sure the glue doesnt get in between the ring and lever though. It orked perfectly for me btw..

Sticker backing... like wax paper? That's interesting. But when I tightened my shift knob down all the way, it seemed to lock the reverse lockout ring into place (laterally). The rattle is definitely now coming from the slack in the cable inside the shifter.

Yeah, like wax paper.

It locked it in place? Nice. Mine never did that. What shift knob do you have?

Stock. I just know the ring stopped chattering when I tightened the knob down fully.

I've kinda got a rattle in the shifter under partial throttle and low RPM engine braking. I held my reverse ring and I don't think it changed much.

Oh well, doesn't bother me. That's what the TBE is for, to cover up the other annoying sounds

I'm fixing it for something to do. It bothered me for a week. After the trackday, I was like: "Meh."

Yeah I know how that is... my shift knob was rattling loud enough to mask my TBE!

I fixed that right away. But the added NVH under partial throttle at low speeds isn't enough for me to rip it all apart.

UPDATE:

Shifter rattle is t3h gone. It was subsiding as I drove it, but yesterday I went out, yanked it, and wrapped the reverse lockout cable in electrical tape. Reinstalled and voila - silence.

Default Re: boony's motown STi - WTF are rally rings?

So, new mod time.

After a dyno day at Speed Industry yesterday, which was a blast, some members retired to Jason's place to get a few mods done.

Adam and Ryan (NASIOC members) along with Jason (jtsherri, our host) and Donnie (turboranger) took on a few things. Donnie and Ryan swapped out Ryan's catback in a dark garage whilst I (with some much-needed help from Donnie and Ryan) removed the peepers from my 06 STi.

The goal - clear them and paint them.

Jason has done this before to his 04 (twice, I believe). That's the primary reason I was able to gather the courage to go forward. I consulted Caesar (Lightwerkz) a few times, as he is the absolute expert of all things headlight related. With his advice and encouragement, and the help of Jason and Donnie, we went to work.

The paint: I ordered World Rally Blue Pearl paint in a rattle-can from PaintScratch along with some clearcoat. I had some duplicolor automotive primer (which you can get at Wal Mart, et al), and I used Rustoleum satin black indoor/outdoor paint from Home Depot.

Jason's oven kicks ass. Mine is not only a POS apartment oven, but it's too small to fit the MASSIVE headlight assembly into anyway. Baked at 200 degrees for about 15 minutes. Separated the assembly, outer lens, and trim. Then it was trim painting time.

After a few n00b mistakes with masking and such, we finally got it all painted. We didn't let it dry for very long, so I'm hoping there's not much outgassing from the paint within the sealed housing. We regooped, resealed, and reinstalled the headlights.

NOTE: reinstallation - like uninstallation - is a PITA.

Anyway. Jason took some pictures in his garage with his very nice camera. I'll post/link to those when I get them. For now, you have to make do with my crappy point-and-shoot skills from this morning in the garage. It looks even better in person:

World Rally Blue Pearl trim rings around the projectors? Yes. Rally rings. Baby Jeebus is pleased.

Thanks again to Jason and Donnie, without whom my weaksauce mechanic skills would have prevented the endeavor entirely.
