I also remmoved the counter weight on my tranny cross member 2 bolt's like 2-4lb's and cut the weight off the drive shaft shield back by the rear diff. 2-4lbs plus bracket's that aren't needed really like for wire harnesses and stuff. Oh and if you pull down the drivers side kick panel there a big metal bracket i had to take down to reach my ignition wires while installing the turbo timer thats like another 2-4lbs. if you remove interior panels you'd be surprised how much stuff is there thats not needed.
My wheels and tires are so good in terms of balance that they use none, 1/4 ounce, or 1/2 ounce weights on all 4 tires.

That counter weight is 1.0 lb. Weigh it... it's not 2-4 lbs!

As for the driveshaft shield, I completely removed it to save about 4 lbs.

Ad for the wiring brackets, I'm 2 steps ahead of you . The first thing I did when I got my car is remove all the interior panels and removed every single metal and plastic bracket holding the wiring in place that wasn't necessary... replaced all with zip ties... took me like a week but it saved about 30 lbs.

Hell no! I would never sell my STI! Get a beater car for winter sure... but never sell my STI! I'm actually thinking of getting a Honda Fit as a beater car so I can work on my STI without worrying that it's my only car!

The wheels and wing and lack of a hoodscoop make it look different than stock... BUT... in terms of how light it is, it does not look stripped out at all... it still has all the seats and door panels and dash... and even the stock stereo... the rear center pass through was removed to save about 5.5 lbs but it is still a 4 seater!

That is the original block if someone wants to build it up. I also have a 6 speed tranny for sale now as well.

No, an aquaintance that has an 07 STI had his car corner weighted and PM'd me the specs. I just wanted to record it in my journal since our PM's are limited and I delete them after replying to them for the most part. I just thought posting the corner weights would be interesting for future reference.

It's awesome. The only complaint I have is that the mating coupler thingy had 2 edges that were not the same as stock. Therefore, when using those half moon bolts that use the edges to prevent them from rotating, u will need to stick a flathead screwdriver in there to prevent the bolts from rotating. I felt that for such an expensive product, they would have been able to engineer that part a little better. I had some scraping in the tunnel, EVEN with the driveshaft protection plate off, but nothing major and nothing that affected the balance.

Maybe you explained this somewhere but I know you mentioned how silver is the most lightweight paint. I was curious how you know that?

Did I say that? If I did semi jokingly, I don't have any factual proof it is the lightest out of the colors that the STI was offered in (silver, blue, black, and white). I do know that red is the heaviest paint due to the pigment used in that color.

I did not remove the rear window motors. I only considered it. The JDM Spec C I believe has manual rear windows and thus if I went with the Spec C glass, I thought I might as well convert the rear windows to manual while I was at it. If I were to take an educated guess, I would probably use some sort of C-clamp to hold it up, or if u never plan on changing it, just glue it in... I suppose the glue could be heated and melted if u ever wanted to remove it in the future. To get the motors out is very complicated. I took a look at it and u essentially have to remove everything to remove anything... if that makes sense .

Here is a pic of the front door without the panel. I don't have one of the rear door... or maybe I do but I can't currently find it on my computer.

Oh, dang. Yeah, you mentioned it when you were talking about your old Civic. And here I was telling all my friends to buy silver cars 'cause they weigh less.

Well in general lighter colors do weigh less, so it wouldn't surprise me if the silver and white were slightly lighter than the blue and black... but it depends on so many other factors... just avoid red and you're good .

My thoughts are only slightly different:
  • get a Honda Fit as a daily driver
  • keep the winter wheel/tire combo and use the STi as my winter "when you absolutely, positively, have to get there and want to have a giant hoot while doing so" car
At this point in time my plan is to, like you, never sell my STi. Next on my list is to turn it into a street legal hillclimb car.

Good to see you back.

hey,

decided to open up this thread and check up on the progress. i am really jealous of your unsprung weight reduction... i need to save up some money and do that as i love driving off-road.

when you run out of things to do - tackle your electrical system, including sensors and plugs. for example:
- remove the rear o2 sensor, and remove the bung from the downpipe
- strip the loom and insulation off of the wiring
- remove the wiring from the harness for the o2 sensor, tgv motors and sensors, pcv hose "sensor", DRL components, etc.
- also, you can replace relays with transistors (that will also eliminate the ticking).
- if you are not bugged by the smell of gas, remove all valve cover vent hoses.

AFAIK you did not do those things. all that should add up to ~20#

good luck, and keep us updated,
Ashot

Bro, Titanium or Magnesium bolts could save a TON of weight! Plus a uber cool factor!

1. The removal of the ebrake was genius if I don't say so myself ;-). I custom designed the brackets and ABS sensor holder and so far so good.

2. What negatives are there for removing the rear O2 sensor and downpipe bung?

Already did TGV although I should cut the wiring for that (left it on in case I want to go back to stock, but seriously, who am I kidding? lol... could save 0.25 to 0.5 lbs for the 4 wiring looms.

3. What does the PCV hose sensor do?

Already did DRL.

4. Where do I source the transistors to replace the relays? Which relays should I start with? I can't see this saving much to be honest. Most of those relays weigh 0.25 lbs at the most.

5. Where are the valve cover vent hoses? Pics and I will do it since gas smell does not bug me!

I honestly don't think 20 lbs is to be saved from the stuff u mentioned... more like 5 lbs. I removed the TGV's which saved about 2 lbs.

Where is an online source for Ti or Magnesium bolts? I've been wanting to do this for YEARS... dating back to my Honda days. This would probably be the next logical step.

Just thought of this (but haven't thought it through). How about cutting out the floor of the trunk (you already removed your spare tire, right?) or at least part of it, and replacing it with a piece of carbon? I'm not sure if the trunk floor is structural or how important it might be for rear collision though.
