I just found the member journal section of this forum and have really enjoyed reading about peoples projects. I found this part of the forum after researching a blow through setup for my own SZ55 APS FMIC combo and noticed that apsensti05’s build is a lot like mine! At least in power mods, in every other category he dominates!!! 

I am aaronwrx from nasioc. I bought my first subaru in June of 2001 and was an early utec adopter. I rate my utec abilities as better-then-most, not as good as some. My own road tuning netted me 300whp/300ft/bs on a dynojet at a local dyno day.

I bought my 05 STI in September of 2004 and have put 14 thousand miles on it so far. The reason for the low mileage is I travel a ton for work and when I am in town I have a short commute. For me the car is just a hobby I like to wrench on. I have done all the work myself. (minus custom welding.) 

I don’t know if I’ll ever take it to the track or participate in any type of motorsports. I have a loving wife who hates my car but puts up with all the nonsense. It’s my only transportation so I need to keep from blowing it up. I’m not a fan of in-your-face styling when it comes to a daily driver. I try to keep things subdued. Partly because I’m getting older and partly due to the overbearing-in-your-face over zealous law enforcement in northern Virginia where I live. The flip side of that is I do indulge myself on a few blingy items from time to time. I just HAD to have the volk center caps! 

Now just like a lot of you I spend a lot of time on the forums. I read, researched, debated for hours trying to put together the perfect combination for my car. I was sold on a water-to-air intercooler that never came to pass. I ended up getting an APS FMIC to go with my SZ55.

the SZ55 was in my opinion the perfect turbo for it's time. I ordered mine the very week the "mother of all bolt on turbos" thread hit the proven power bragging forum on nasioc. This was going to be the stock location turbo that didnt need an external wastegate that would get me close to 400whp.

This turbo strikes ph34r in the heart of my chihuahua:

Now of course this isnt a perfect world. Just like a lot of you things just havent fallen into place. I got around to installing my SZ55 this past thanksgiving. When I started working on building a base map for it for my utec I noticed I wasnt able to control the boost. I richened up the mab quite a bit, floored it in 3rd and hit 24psi! yikes!

I disconnected my BCS, same 25 psi this time!

I unhooked the flapper so the wastegate whole was WIDE open! 25psi again!

Now that folks is boost creep. The final resolution was I had to send the turbo back to deadbolt. Jerry was very responsive and made this his top priority. He discovered that a machinest that they had fired didnt do the port job on my turbo. He had it back to me in 2-3 days.

At this point I now had the setup to the point where I was ready to get tuned. Now im no stranger to road tuning. I help out a lot of local guys with utec problems. I knew that my typhoon was going to be a problem for my setup.

Here is a 4th gear pull I did early on after getting all the install kinks worked out. The first column is RPM, then boost, the MAFV. The last column is AFR.

wowzers.. 4.9v's of MAF! and that was on a very rich setup running only 18 degrees of timing! I already knew that people with turbos this size use BigMAFs so this wasn’t a surprise. I then had to make a decision on how to fix this.

BigMAF? Proven setup.

Blow Through? On an APS it’s never been done to my knowledge. So I did my blow through homework.
-3inch ID? Check.
-At least 10 inches of straight before the MAF sensor? Check.
-A bend before the TB? Check.

I wanted a BTM setup for a few reasons.
1.) low cost. It only cost me 30 bucks to put a MAF place on my IC pipe.
2.) Better idle. Many BTM setups report better idle.
3.) Larger VTA bov would be ok. I had problems with the OEM and the APS. I wanted a bullet proof proven bov that required zero maintenance.
4.) If I ever blew an IC coupler (which I did 3 separate times while working out the kinks of my install) I could just disconnect the coupler from the passenger side fender well and limp home with ease.

So I did it.

After I was done I made some blank blates out of aluminum and returned it to stock.

arent the APS pipes nice? Cool, lets cut holes in them!!!!!

At this point it’s safe to say I have a non standard setup. I’ve surpassed what I can do tuning wise. If I had some decent utec base maps to work with I probably could have gotten the job done. But turboxs doesn’t provide any basemaps beyond a TBE. Still, when you are road tuning you only have some clues or indicators that you are making power. Things like timing adjustments to find the MBT need to be done on a dyno.

I guess I’m in luck; who should be the best utec tuner? Turboxs of course! And only 35 minutes from my house I can’t go wrong.

Tuesday March 14th I took my car to the most highly regarded subaru mechanic in my area. Andrewtech/Gearboxtech who is just down the street from turboxs. I’ve done all the install work myself so far and even though I’ve been driving it for 2-3 months I wanted pros to look over everything before my dyno tune appointment at 5:30 pm the same day.
They installed 1-step colder plugs and gave me the thumbs up.

At this point my power related modifications include:
-SZ55fbig
-Perrin injectors, perrin inlet tube, perrin EBCS
-Walbro fuel pump
-TurboXS UTEC, Tuner pro, nexus gauges
*-TurboXS jet hot coated catless TBE with the 2.5 inch taper bolted up to their straight through magnaflow muffler (not the RFL)
-APS DR725 FMIC + Tial 50mm BOV
-K&N Typhoon
-Blow through MAF plate for the IC pipe and aluminum blank I made for the typhoon.

.. off to turboxs for the tune.

March 14th, 5:30pm. the guys are bolting my car to their dynapack. I'm no stranger to the dyno. I've attended several local dyno days at the local dynojet. I used the dynodays to monitor my progress. In fact, i'm the guy who did the typhoon before and after dyno test.

Problem number #1 They said my blow through setup wasnt stable. I looked at the MAFv in their utec logs and noticed it was fluctuating quite a bit. They let me know that they have pleanty of base maps for their bigMAF and that it would be a lot easier to bolt that on now, and tune from there. I was reluctant but I had to side with the experts here. I want a stable car.

Here is 93 octane and C16 dyno that got me excited about this turbo:

Here is the same turbo on 91 octane. 386whp! nice!:

Here is aspenwhites injen v.s aps dyno on 93 octane. Wow.:

Now here are the numbers on the same dyno I was tuned on.
-93 octane Stock STI
-93 octane FP Green, OEM TMIC, same exhaust I have
-c16 FP Green, OEM TMIC, same exhaust I have.

wow so with a green they made 340ft/lbs and 353hp on the stock tmic? Well then surely the sz55 and APS fmic should be better right???

Here were the results from my dynotune at turboxs. 322ft/lbs and 351whp:

Now keep in mind I made 300ft/lbs with my vf39 on a dynojet that my car baselined 238hp 242ft/lbs on.

I am BEYOND DISAPPOINTED. The return on my investment to be frank, sucks.

When I asked my tuner why the numbers were so low he said that my exhaust is a restriction and that I would have had higher numbers if I had an external wastegate and a full 3 inch ehaust. They said that if they pushed the car anymore that it began to knock. I'm glad that safety is their number one priority. I don't want to pop the motor. It was obvious that I was dissappointed with the results and they said they would help me work this out.

they created several maps for my car. Map 1 was the most aggressive map. This is a 4th gear log of a highway pull I did on the way home from my dyno tune.

Great journal man! The SZ55 is my target turbo. Hopefully I can get the SZ55 and proper supporting mods to take me to the 400/400 area. I think I will be plenty happy there. I hope things work out for you and I am sure that the 2.5" exhaust is indeed hurting your numbers. Intake, 3" TBE, stock turbo/tmic, and an Ecutek tune netted me 336wtq - that's even with a catted DP. I know how irrelevant cross-dyno comparisons are, but I'm sure it would be comparable on your local dyno. You seem like a very smart fellow and I'm sure you'll get it worked out. Good luck and keep the good posts coming!

Wow this is intresting I had some similar problems with my set up. I think a lot has to do with the dyno. Nhulur and I talked about this prior to my purchase of the SZ55; that some dynos can produce much better numbers based on the way they are set up. I know that TurboXS's dyno will naturally put down lower numbers due to where the hp read is at.

My cat and bov were to blame for my numbers. Pigs plots are up and freak'n GREAT!

I was expecting a 400 whp too, especially after seeing Apen's journal.

It really comes down to how the car drives, trap speed and time, right?

Great journal bro!
