Jake's tires were missing some chunks! We had to change his brake pads, because he had NO MEAT left on the inner pads....he even shaved some of his rotor (found a lil piece of shaved metal).

Regarding your description of the greasy feel of your tires, that was the first time they got hot and thats how it feels to drive on hot rubber. You were just pushing harder than you ever could on the street, it was not really a problem. One important aspect of track driving is the slip angle of your tires. It is the difference between where the tire is pointing and where it is going in a curve. Thats where the squealing sound comes from. If it is not squealing then there is more grip available in the tire. They should squeal from turn in to trackout! A squealing tire is a happy tire!! You will work up to constant squeal, Jake is there already, He was really torturing his rubber!!
I am going to get the video posted of my last run for your review....see it later

Hey Steve, Great driving for your first day! You got some good tire squal through Big Bend. At your next track day with scda we will refine your line, especially through Big Bend and the Left Hander and get you going even faster!! Come to NHIS on the 9th, you could give me a ride there :-(. I'll be your dedicated instructor.

yea, i guess it's a little high. I think most people like to have their hands at 3 and 9 o'clock (which is where i put mine). At limerock you never need to move your hands around on the steering wheel because there aren't any turns that require you to turn that much.

after watching my in car video, tim actually does the same thing as steve, except just not quite as pronounced. he also returns his hand to 3 and 9 once the turn is over.

Interesting, I think I like 10:30 and 2:30 with some prepositioning
and passing. Jakes comment about not turning too far is true of course. I think my objective in doing so may be to have my hands at my preferred positions mid curve. I think for me my positioning is instinctual. When I started racing I relied on seat of the pants and emotion and developed certain habits then. Then later in my racing I was lucky to learn applied theory from Bob Akin and Joe Stimola. Bob advised my while scca racing my Porsche, Joe while I ran Canadian ChampcarLites. Hand position was close enough to do the job. I had someone recently in novice group who wanted to use 10 and 5. That was immediatly unworkable and he switched and liked it.
I say close enough! after some babble
