I bought a Nikon D50 on Monday and I'm just learning to take advantage of it's capabilities. I've been wanting to get some exterior shots of the car but the weather's been terrible and the car is filthy. I got so desperate, though, that I actually washed the car in the pouring rain after dinner last night. I just couldn't stand it anymore. I got soaked but the car is clean .

What I found worked best was a 1.5 to 2 second shutter speed at 800 ISO on shutter priority mode. The trick was getting the timing right to capture what I wanted. That's why I'm loving the "digital" age--I used a film slr for a short time years ago but I could never really experiment with it.

I love the camera! But it depends on your needs if it's right for you. I've always been a bit of a photo bug and after living with a few digital point and shoot cameras over the years, there were specific features that only a DSLR could offer, and it was getting increasingly frustrating using the camera that I had. Things like instant on, super fast focusing, and low light capability were very important to me. What I sacrifice is size and weight, and the ability to take pictures discretely .

There's actually a lot of new point and shoot cameras that take nice pictures, too, but none of them could give me what I was looking for.

How's that for sitting on the fence?

do you find that this camera is somewhat easy to use, or does it take a while to know how to REALLY be good at it?

Oh, definitely. It's easy to use. It's got different program settings and you can just let the camera do it's thing. With my old camera, I found that I had to do a lot of fixing on the computer to make it look good. With the Nikon, there's no need.

I bought it from Ritz Camera in a mall for $550 and it came with a cheap lens (and a free teddy bear ). I saved over $200 versus buying it in Canada. Actually, the lens is good enough for me now. Once I get better, I'll know more about what I want in terms of lenses.

No problem. They're both good cameras. The Canon has more pixels but one of the reviews said that casual users won't really notice the difference. For me it came down to how each one felt in my hand. The Canon is smaller (and lighter I believe). But I had a Nikon film slr before and I was used to the controls and the larger size fit better for me.

I don't think you can go wrong either way.
