Nice find, hopefully that kid learned his lesson. For the STi's sake. Good luck with the engine build up.

Would you actually feel comfortable using it if it was not given oil and 60k old? Or is replacing the internals enough to fix the block?

You can get the block x ray'd, see if its got any cracks in it. However, if the engine was starved of oil, the pistons definetely were knocking around and the engine probably over heated. So, I do agree with you on your point. Obviously if the block isn't cracked, you can rebuild it. That means rebuild everything. Could also get the block to rev higher and build it to your own specs.

I don't know the full story....other than hey...you want this longblock we got? So I am going to send it out to get inspected, and ready for a stroker kit.....get the whole block machined and etc. Still have a lot of research to do!

Sell the heads & buy a built short block.

He can use the heads he has on his car, all that Chris needs is a short block with forged internals.
The heads that are on that block (if they are in good shape) are in pretty high demand and can yield $1000-$1500. He could probably sell the block for a couple hunge too.

You can buy a bare block & STi crank for around $1300-, and some forged rods & pistons $?? (depends what he gets).....and have Ian assemble it.
There will be other costs involved like gaskets, bearings & such too.

This would be the best solution IMO. To go thru all the trouble and use a block from an oil starved motor does not make sense to me.

I found a brand new bare block for $500- just by luck, and Rich from Precision tuning gave me an STi crank he happened to have and is just charging me for machining it (very cool). Then he is assembling it with forged pistons & rods. After all is said & done with installing etc., it is still costing me north of 5K even with the good deals.

Al, thanks for ordering the M15 for me...I will give you the money when I meet with you this month.

As for the block, the block is in very good condition, and the heads, well who really knows about them. My plans are this: Strip the engine down to nothing, clean and degrease it, and send the block to a machine shop where they are qualified for installing Darton Sleeves....they will also inspect and make sure the block is perfect. They will also machine the block so it can be ready for a Crower 2.7L Stroker kit. I am still researching, but Ian says theres a place around here that installs Darton Sleeves, and can machine the block. Either them or send it to AR Fab or something. Basically once the block is inspected, machined ready for a 2.7L Stroker kit, all me and Ian have to do is just install the stroker kit, and then figure out some work to have done to the heads. Add in a nice fuel system, and maybe do something with the manifold and call it a day. Ian did build race engines in New Zealand.

Sell everything (body kitz, electronic suspensionz, meffff, gaugezz, and every spare part you have) and buy a cosworth engine. Do it once ... Learn from bruce (your buddy), who hasent made a pass in 2-3 years.
Dont mean to sound like an a$$ but if you think about it, im right. Tens of thousands spent on engines that dont work. I dont understand, no matter how many times this stuff has been done and not work, the more it is done...
Im going to have to agree with this dudes skepticism.....

But you know this is going to be a lesson well learned... And remember its only Nick that is talking... who is usually 99.9% correct.. That .1% might just be good enough for this engine to make 1 quarter mile....

Have a nice day
