Default Injen phantom FMIC + stock ecu results.

Let me start off by saying I didn't buy this mod for horsepower gains. Nor did I believe the wild claims Injen made on their website of nearly 30hp increase.
I bought it for the following reasons:

I wanted more consistency driving around town,
More consistent results at the dragstrip or auto x.
I wanted to get rid of the stock hood scoop and replace it with a 2.5 rs hood.
The intercooler was anodized black reducing the visibility of it and keeping with my "low profile" theme.
The pipes are wrinkle red which match the intake manifold.
This kit was almost a true bolt on fmic.
The size isn't too large for my future turbo upgrades (20g)

Driving impressions:
Everyone always wants to know about the "lag." Well I can tell you that it really isn't that noticeable. The lag isn't exactly what I was expecting. I was thinking it was going to be more evo like lag, where you get a second or two before a huge rush of power. Instead, it was a slow build up, and a more flat even pull. I did several WOT runs from 1st-2nd gear and the first day there was a slight hesitation between gear changes even though I was flat foot shifting. On day 2 this feeling went away, and the car smoothed out even more.

I took the car through one of my testing grounds canyon run a few times to get a feel for the car with the fmic on. This was a few days after I had the fmic already installed. The car shined the most in here. As long as I was making some kind of boost the car would respond I feel even better than the tmic. The butt dyno felt the car pull harder the closer to redline I got. Where as the tmic would spike and taper off toward redline. The whole trip through (about 45 min worth of driving at a safe speed) I never experienced any heat soak / loss of response like I had with the tmic before. I noticed on several occasions where at the same throttle it felt like the car was walking away from me (boost would continue to build with my foot at a steady position on the throttle) where the tmic used to get a big rush and taper off. This goes back to my first impressions of a more linear pull sensation with the fmic.

Dragstrip Results.
Here's some backround on me and my modifications & times.
ALL Stock best 1/8 8.44 @ 80.5 (Irwindale dragstrip)

Added a B&B catless dp + K&N cai.

B&B dp + K&N cai best 1/8 8.29 @ 82.8 (Irwindale dragstrip)
B&B dp + K&N cai best 1/4 13.08 @ 103.3 (famoso dragstrip)

I then took the wing off and since kept it off.
B&B dp + K&N cai + wingless best 1/8 8.24 @ 83.2 (Irwindale dragstrip)
*one thing to note about the wing, I had a highest trap of the night at 83.8, and never went into the 82's the car could have done a better time (8.1's) but I couldn't get there.

I then added perrin crank pulley
B&B dp + K&N cai + wingless + perrin crank pulley best 1/8 8.10 @ 84.5 (Irwindale dragstrip)
B&B dp + K&N cai + wingless + perrin crank pulley best 1/4 12.9 @ 105 with a 8.2 1/8 mile (California speedway)

I also ran at LACR which if anyone in southern California knows it’s a slow track 2700ft elevation.
Best 13.29 @ 101.2 with a highest trap of the night at 101.8.

I then installed the Injen phantom FMIC.
B&B dp + K&N cai + wingless + perrin crank pulley + Injen FMIC best 1/8 8.28 @ 82.7 (Irwindale dragstrip)
B&B dp + K&N cai + wingless + perrin crank pulley + Injen FMIC best 1/4 13.25 @ 102.3 (California speedway)
B&B dp + K&N cai + wingless + perrin crank pulley + Injen FMIC best 1/4 13.33 @ 102.1 (LACR-was a really really cold night 50 degrees & density altitude was about 900 feet)

So there you have it. I have come to the conclusion 5 different dragstrip days later after installing the Injen FMIC on the stock ecu I have gotten slower. My first 2 first at lacr and then at Irwindale I thought were inconclusive, but after 2 more Irwindale days & another California speedway day My times haven't gotten close to my old times with the TMIC, and my trapspeeds have suffered greatly.

I have lost on average 2mph at my 1/8 mile marker, and 3 mph at the 1/4.

I hope other people who are thinking of buying this particular FMIC for power gains do not do it on the stock ecu.

I'm saving up for some kind of em, still undecided on which one to go with, and once I get tuned I'll run the 1/8's and 1/4 again and post up my results from a tuned perspective. It will be a nice compare to see what kind of gains tuning will bring. I honestly have no clue, but once I do I'll share the results.

**********************EDIT**********************
Updated time from LACR 01/04/06
1.752
5.352
8.350
81.899mph
10.846
13.124

**********************EDIT**********************
Updated results from Irwindale Dragstrip 01/05/06
1.790
5.350
8.310
83.24
part in bold is the important part, never broke 83mph before the rs hood. I was also overweight with 3/4 tank of gas, will re-run next week and post up the results with a 1/4 tank.
**********************EDIT**********************
Updated time from California speedway (dragstrip) 01/14/06 with 2.5 RS hood
1.802
5.393
8.384
81.80
10.942
13.117

.
Bold is new best ET and new best mph. Seems i picked up about 1.5mph at the 1/4 vs the stock sti hood

You would really need to wait a good 4 days before the tests can be conclusive.

Not really sure what you expected though. Regardless of what the manufacturer says, mods as big as a FMIC really need tuning to see gains.
Because I guarantee you can lean your fuel down and up the timing a bit, and probably see 20whp after some tuning work. 30whp though... Not without rasing boost (which you should be able to do as well)

But 30whp with no other mods/tuning? Give me a break injen

Please do keep us updated on it. Hopefully you can get back out to the strip again before tuning to see if maybe the ecu learns for it any more. At that point the ecu had probably done all the learning it was going to do but I am still curious to see if there are any more changes. And keep us updated once you tune!

I posted what I wanted out of the fmic in the second paragraph

The fmic has been on for almost a month now. and I have gone to Irwindale 3 times (once every week) california speedway once, and lacr once.

The first dragstrip I went to was lacr which was on a wednesday because thanks giving week irwindale was closed and lacr was open on wednesday. I had installed the fmic on saturday nov 19th.

The minor differences dont come from my driving, but more so from track conditions/weather. However having about 100 or so passes under my belt at the drag strip, I can rule out the driver from the equations.

The only time that I think driver could factor in is my last wingless run with the b&b dp + k&n cai. I had enough mph to get into 8.1's but I just couldn't get that elusive time slip. Once I put the perrin crank pulley on and started going consistantly 84 mph 8.1's were cake.

I dont really use ET as much as I do mph. From my data it seems i've lost mph, that is something that has remained pretty consistant prior to the installation of the fmic.

given your mods, a reflash would absolutely be in order

Crank pulley seemed to show gains even though everyone says it doesn't. My old stg 2 WRX felt faster with a pulley. Very interesting.

yes that suprised me the most.

prior to crank pulley install highest trap at irwindale was 83.8, after crank pulley install never went below 84mph, and peaked out at 84.6.

my butt dyno didn't feel any faster tho. for such a cheap and easily installed part so far it has been worth it.

Is that AFTER the original post? I am not clear on that.

Just trying to get the big picture
