I'm starting my next project for the STI: CarPC

I purchased a used custom LCD bezel, along with a Xenarc 700TSV touchscreen LCD and Panasonic DVD/CDRW drive. I believe the guy I'm buying it from is also a member of IWSTI, so you may have seen this picture before. When I get it, I'll take my own photo and replace this, but for now...

I'm just about finished ordering the rest of it, here are the specs:
  • Ampie/VoomPC Mini-ITX case
  • M1-ATX power supply
  • VIA EPIA MII12000 motherboard
  • Custom Audiomotivegruppe bezel
  • Xenarc 700TSV 7" 800x480 LCD touchscreen
  • Panasonic slot-load DVD/CDRW drive
  • BU-353 GPS receiver w/iGuidance 2.1.3
  • 80GB 2.5" IDE laptop hard drive
  • 512MB DDR memory

Installed RallyArmor mudflaps last night, here are some pics. I haven't decided if these will be year-round or not, definitely want them through the winter though!

I've got my CarPC installed... mostly. Still working on the details, especially with the software. And need to do some clean-up on the wiring below the seat. But it's functional at least. Here are some pics...

Oh my gosh, that is so freaking cool. I build my own computers and would love to do that in my car. What kind of parts did you use and how much did it cost you?

Here is a list of the parts I used:
  • Ampie/VoomPC Mini-ITX case
  • M1-ATX power supply
  • VIA EPIA MII12000 motherboard
  • Custom Audiomotivegruppe bezel
  • Xenarc 700TSV 7" touchscreen LCD
  • Panasonic slot-load DVD/CDRW drive
  • BU-353 GPS receiver w/iGuidance 2.1.3
  • Samsung 40GB 2.5" IDE laptop hard drive
  • 256MB DDR memory

I bought the bezel used from the guy who created it. The company he works for (or may own, not sure) says they do custom bezels for a price.

If I hadn't come across the bezel for sale at the exact moment I was looking, I was planning on getting the WRX-specific double din LCD enclosure and a Lilliput 7" touchscreen display. The upside to getting the totally custom bezel is that the LCD was relocated upwards a bit, making enough room to put a slimline DVD drive in below it. With the bolt-in enclosure and Lilliput screen, you'd have to find another solution for the DVD drive.

Altogether I'm into the project about $1100. It's possible to do it cheaper, depending on what route you choose. I wanted something very small, with very low power consumption, and minimal cooling requirements. Some people use laptops. Some use full size PC's strapped down in the trunk. If you want it to be able to play modern 3D shoot-em-up games, you might need to find a solution that will allow for a more powerful processor and graphics system. I just wanted DVD, Nav, Music, and Net.

Dave

Nice looking PC install. I had never considered this option, but now I am. What are you using for 'net access?

Thanks.

Right now, the only networking device I have is a WiFi USB adapter. I had planned to get the motherboard with a PCMCIA slot, but a mixup on my order landed me with the SP13000 instead... otherwise I could use a CDMA broadband card every third week (when I'm on call ). Eventually I would like to have full time access that'll even work when I'm moving.

^^ Wow, nice. If I would do it I would something that you did, I don't need crazy processing as I have that at home, plus weight is a huge factor. I may just get a double-din DVD/nav system instead of carputer, since I really don't want to have to do any custom fabricating or special ordering a benzel. Very nice work though, I love how original it is.

I was thinking about putting a Mac Mini in my car but there were just so many things needed to be done to complete this that I have put this in the backburner until summer. How did you manage to get the sound going to all the speakers? Did you have to install another amp?

I briefly considered the Mac Mini as well, but came to the conclusion that the software support was not good enough yet. As much as it pains me to do it, I had to use Windows. I'm still trying to properly neuter it so it will quit popping up those little bubbles in the lower right corner reminding me to run automatic updates. Grrr....

As for sound ... well, I have none at the moment . Removing the stock head unit took care of that. Next week, once I know what is under the Christmas tree, I will be purchasing aftermarket speakers and an amp, so I can have tunes again. I want to get a Raam underseat sub, but at this point that looks like it may never happen. I may fab something up myself, but that will probably mean I go with an 8 instead of a 10.

Rootus, sweet car man! Got a question those pics of your car are with the pinks with the Group-N hats in the back and the RCE camber plates up front and it got you that ride height? I love the way your car sits and if I can get mine to sit the way your does looks like I have my parts list. :-)

Merry Christmas!
