Awesome build up! Hey, did you ever consider the Cosworth heads? That might be a great compliment for your setup.

The cantaloupe shooter rocks! Even after the event out at E-Town last week, I still think this is the best sounding exhaust by far.

These Cosworth heads have peaked my interest...there's just something about Cosworth and Heads. They seem pricey, but it's probably not tremendously more than having a shop do them. The only information I don't see is about cams.

Here's a link:
http://www.cosworth.com/shop_item.php?productid=345

Can't wait to see your car when it's done. Do you think you'll make the next event at e-town (October 1-2)?

$4K? Yeah, that seems a bit spendy, but these are new heads, not re-worked ones. Most head work won't include the cams because they have no idea what powerband the customer wants - one grind doesn't fit all. On the STi, however, I'm not too sure there are a whole lot of options out there.

Bruce might know the answer to that one.

according to tuners i've spoken with, they like the stock cams. there are drag racing cams (jun, etc.) but you'll be giving up a lot of response where you use it most in the low/mid range.

dpr is making an avcs cam (in 4 stages) for the sti. it's pretty new so i haven't seen a review. i might look into it the next time i have the heads out. on this trip, i settled for a spring and retainer upgrade. http://store.dprracing.com/cams/subaru/dprbillet.htm

Bruce:

I like the layout of your FMIC piping - it's much cleaner than the Perrin, which runs the reverse direction necessitating a piping crossover right in front of the manifold intake. In my case, it also runs the return pipe right over the top of the turbo, which isn't too [pardon the pun] cool.

Does your intake vent to the outside, or does it suck air from the engine compartment?

hey fly,

that crossover in the perrin kit sounds goofy. i'm going to extraordinary lengths to manage heat soak with every thermotec wrap/insulation i can rationally apply to the project. i can't imagine further complicating the cooling part of the equation.

the intake is pulling from the engine bay but we're going to fabricate some kind of heat shield solution al la typhoon.

btw, in a nasioc "power bragging" thread about which tuner/shop from the u.s. will be the first to get into the 10's, my project just got nominated by offset as a contender and no one is arguing with him (must be a nasioc first).
i can't take the pressure.

It certainly deserves the nomination, but I didn't know the 1/4 was your thing. Sheesh, whaddya need all the suspension and brake work for, eh? I quote, "kw v3's, cobb arb's, htchkis endlnks, brces/bshngs/mts by gtspec, whtlne, csco, kboy, 6pt rbar. brakes: brembo slt'd rotors, pagid blues, cobb ss lines."

Nah, you just want to totally dust anyone/everyone off in all the straights between the twisties *and* in the twisties between the straights. You want to be at the bar at the end of the drive already drinking a beer as they pull up 5 minutes later in their brand new $100K Porsche and jump out yelling, "WTF *IS* that thing?"

Common', fess up. You just want to put some serious hurt on those poor unsuspecting knotheads that [mistakenly] believe their tutonic vundercars are invincible. Moreover, you really want to rub it in as you merrily drive by in the middle of winter, while their "precious" sits in a garage waiting 5 months for clear roads.

Truth be told, so do I. Ain't life grand?

I don't often get arguments on NASIOC, and when I do they usually stay polite and are eventually resolved one way or the other. It seems to me that some people just refuse to understand how to communicate with others in a productive way. Anyway, the main reason for me bringing you up is that you seem to be the closest to running most of a kit from a vendor (namely Phil); and of course that you have a good chance of hitting 10s if you can drive it in the quarter. So for my comment maybe someday I will get a chance to go for a ride in that beast, look me up if you are ever over in Ohio

daily update - day 39

we're coming down the home stretch. we're spent the last couple days finishing the fabricating and heat wrapping the exhaust components and intercooler plumbing. i've got some port matching to do on the stock header before we wrap the center pipe. just between you and me...cast iron sucks.

pics - in order
- two shots of the 3" intercooler pipe to the throttle body, wearing a corset fit for a victoria secret model - complete with turbosmart dual exhaust bov
- the hot side of the gt65 wrapped in termotech insulation and closed with safety wire
- the intake manifold and tumblers are ready for installation. the paint take 7 days to cure so i had to calculate that into the build time.

btw, had i forced a battan death march to completion on my original 10-14 day time line, this is exactly the kind of detail (lapping the valves and upgrading the springs/retainers are another) that would have been set aside. things happen for a reason, eh?
