valve timing update:

we finally got down to it tonight. everything in front of the timing cover came out, and then the timing cover itself. we found the belt and gears were all lined up on their marks and everything in order. the belt and tensioners came off and the intake cam gears were removed. once the passenger side cam end was exposed we removed the valve cover, allowing us to drop light into the hole at the end of the cam to confirm that the oil passage and relief hole needed to operate the avcs was present and accounted for. much to my surprize, the holes seem to be correct and it is not the oil passage problem that has recently surfaced over on nasioc on another set of kelford's. although we only removed the passenger side timing cover, we can confirm that the oil hole itself is in the drivers side intake cam. we'll remove the cover tomorrow to make sure the relief hole is there, too, but it seems unlikely it isn't.

so, now what? we might run the intake cam gears down to colonial subaru to see if they can see anything wrong with them, so we haven't ruled them out as the problem. meanwhile, we'll do a compression and leakdown test to rule out a more significant cam timing issue or defect or some other explanation.

at the moment i am relieved that the oil passage situation has been ruled out but perplexed as what it will turn out to be. depending on the results of the leakdown test, we may be able to avoid pulling the motor.

i was sure we were going to find non avcs cams sitting in there, chris. the leakdown test should tell the story. if the cam timing is so far off that we're seeing a 50% power loss, we'll hear it coming out the exhaust. pray for quiet.

I don't remember the details, but what was your egt during the dyno pulls? Was it low?

Also assuming A:F ratios and boost levels were more or less normal.
