IWSTI Addict since: Dec 2003 Trader Rating: (1) | update: the last time i had my laptop turned on was last wednesday while i was still in austin. i almost missed my flight out of austin because i got lackadaisical about time. i didn't get into newark until 2am and after driving 2 hours, into bed at 4. from noon on thursday until today, i've been almost totally focused on the car. i've also been racking up mileage since i drove it home on thursday night; sorting out issues as they arose. i'm not sure how to sum it up coherantly. instead of an hourly blow by blow i'll describe the main areas, starting with the motor. motor: i've put 400 miles on it using a shockingly gentile (for a neanderthal) break in protocol, i.e., no boost under varing rpms and loads not exceeding 4000rpm except for a few strategic runs up to 5 grand and back, again, without boost. phil gave me a 5k rpm limit. egts have stayed below 400c. all the other gauges are within normal limits. it has consumed no oil in 400 miles. we just changed it for the first time. the quality of miles i've been able to accumulate out here in recreational paradise has been outstanding. you cannot imagine how much fun i'm having doing 100 miles of local driving a day in this thing. this motor is completely different from the last. the last motor with its 2.6l stroker crank had significantly improved low end grunt over a stock block. our current set-up with its overbored sponsored 2.6l cobb pro stage1 longblock, headwork and kelford race cams has not begun to show itself yet. you can feel it there on the edges off boost but the power band has definately been moved to the right. 8000 rpm is going to be mindblowing. this motor is much louder with the cams. i was stopped by a trooper for the after a total of only 10 miles and on my own street. he let me go but he pulled me only because he heard me. it is possible that i may be forced to get a quieter exhaust than my billy boat but i'm going to have to get stopped more than that to give it up. the cams give the b&b note a disturbingly angry and hostile sound. i've had the windows down the entire time soaking up the cacophony of sounds that is my car. motor issues: my only problem is the idle won't hold once it's warmed up, which has made me really good at holding/feathering idle by heal and toeing it. we consulted with phil and followed through with his tuning suggestions but the issue persists. we'll give it another wack tomorrow but to tell you the truth i'm getting used to it. phil will be seeing it in a week anyway for tuning. fuel system: the system is working great. we have a very small leak from one of the AN fittings that is evaporating before it gets anywhere. it's just enough to add some arroma to that whole sound thang in the car. we don't have the aeromotive pump tied into the ignition yet, so i have a toggle switch that i absolutely must remember to turn on (and off) as part of the start-up procedure. just starting the car uses about the same kind of checklist that pilots are familiar with. chassis: to show you how stiff the chassis is with the custom roll bar and 2x2" tubular frame integrated into the unibody, we jacked up one corner of the car and that entire side of the car rose as one unit. then you can walk around the car while it's up on two wheels and open and close all four doors - buttery smooth - as if it was sitting upright. it's freaking amazing. the car has zero flex. suspension: i broke two engles camber bolts, the left lower and the right upper bolts just sheered clean off within the first 10 miles. ricky came out on a roadside assist and gave me temporary and much sturdier replacements until we replace them with stock camber bolts. my plan is to get the bolts from the dealer and an alignment at my usual shop on the same trip tomorrow. living with a complete race car as a daily driver: make no mistake, cutn edg is pushing what can be realistically refered to as a daily driver to the absolute limit. ingress into the driver's seat involves a left hand hold on the side bar, swinging my right foot into the footwell, squeezing my hips between the bar and the steering wheel (while not bumping my head), basically letting my ass drop into the sparco pro 2000 chair. my checklist from there: clip my lap belt, lean over to flip the auxilary fuel pump toggle switch, turn the key to start the car, connect my right shoulder belt, connect my left shoulder belt, check fuel and oil pressure gauges and then - plan a getaway. egress is pretty much the same checklist in reverse, except that i drape each piece of the harness in a consistant manner and location to expedite ingress the next time. did i mention i am 54 years old. thank god i'm still catlike. what is freaking wrong with me. so, there my good friends is the story. i'm racking up miles with a grin on my face and in a contemplative stupor; eternally grateful to my enemies and sponsors alike because you cannot get get to where you are without the good and the bad. |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2003 Trader Rating: (0) | Awesome write up Bruce! I was kind of curious how cams would affect our nice boxer rumble. Are you waiting till 1000 miles or higher to come down to get tuned by Phil? I'd love to know when you come so I could meet you and the car! |

IWSTI Addict since: Dec 2003 Trader Rating: (1) | update: march to englishtown (no guts no glory) we had the car down thursday and friday after putting 700 miles on it in 6 days, including a round trip to albany on wed.; about 150 miles. oil consumption has been nil. we have been smelling some fuel in the oil, which is expected on a new race motor. just to be sure we didn't have an issue with a leaky injector, we removed the intake to inspect the tumblers and injectors under pressure. they were fine. we also changed the oil and measured the volume. it was exactly the same volume we added two days and 300 miles previously. we are using castrol 20w50. we still have a fairly strong odor of gas in the cabin. the miniscule leak we still have in one of the AN fittings connected to the surge tank in the trunk can't explain it. tomorrow we're going to examine the entire system from front to back to track it down. i don't think the problem is in the engine bay. i think the problem is somewhere along the lines running through the cabin. i keep the fire extinguisher handy. i want it and a camera mounted in time for englishtown. we're also plugging in the laptop and the wideband to check the afr before heading on that long trip down to md. monday. i'll be racking up as many miles as possible sunday and monday in advance of the trip. monday afternoon, ricky and i are leaving for dc. i am working in virginia tues and wed while ricky hooks up with phil to get it tuned (that's right. i'm missing tuning.) assuming everything goes well with phil, we will be driving it back wed. i'm hoping to make it early enough to get a couple runs in at englishtown on the way back. i spoke with one of my best and closest friends, mike glaser, who is going to be the driver this year at the shootout. he will meet me there wed night if we can both swing it. otherwise, we will be there all day friday getting it sorted out. the first run down the track is mine. he'll get the rest. other stuff: - the driveshaftshop.com aluminum driveshaft is producing harmonics at 60-70 mph. we've tried all the possible mounting options and have spun it 180 degrees trying to find the sweet spot without success, although it is slightly better now than before. we still have the stock unit. i'll probably run it at the shootout with the aluminum shaft. - we went over everything under the car, tightening up anything that was loose. i got into a habit of getting it on a lift every thousand miles or so the last iteration. - my friend kevin is getting the race vinyl with all our sponsors done for englishtown. -we still need to get the nitrous bottle installed. i'm going to see if i can make it to the ny meet to meet ben tomorrow.
