| dances with roads | OMFG. What is it with that car and shoddy engine work! Agree on the northeast "look, it really does run" meet when the thing is back together. I'll take off work to be at that one! This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2006 Trader Rating: (3) | This is interesting, Bruce. The teardown, I mean. We recently built a race motor for a friend's WRX wagon, and had a pretty quick failure after dyno tuning it with no ill effects and a track session. 3rd session it went. Sounds similar to yours: Our car: - signs of oil starvation on middle main bearings - #4 rod bearing lunched - 12mm oil pump - moroso pan and pickup - we were seeing 80+ PSI on the dyno but only 45 on the track. - buckets were scratched up from aftermarket cams (not sure on the brand) - motor never detonated other than the usual bits when tuning on the dyno. 0 knock on the circuit. Your story and ours has some similarities. In our case we're having a classic case of "chicken or egg" where we are trying to determine if the #4 bearing went first, and caused the low oil pressure, or if the bearing went out BECAUSE of the low pressure situation. I'll be sticking to this thread eagerly awaiting some pro analysis of your engine, as it may assist us with our efforts. Oh, and you'll love the gold foil. I've been using it for a long time and it WORKS! Expensive, and hard to lay down without wrinkling it, but works. |

| Amateur STI Driver | So just checking they guy who built this motor works for trey? And you do not want to tell him about it? If it were me I would tell him, so he could fire his butt. Or check over his work so it does not happen again. If i miss read anything, disreg my post. |

Thanks the the infos. Gotta say from reading the way Ron has sometimes behaved "personally" on the various forums I do sometimes find his attitude somewhat unprofressional.. I think I'm going to go with a Cosworth short engine (either the 2.5 or the 2.6 (don't know if it's worth twice the $$$ yet)). My goals are no higher than 450 and no revs >8000 so I should be OK. Finding interest in your use of film instead of ceramics/coating for temp control too! Stu

Sorry to drift on your thread. I love the stuff you are doing. I have had alot of little issues with my build. But nothing compared to what you have gone through.

| S204 Racer | Guys, Jeremy left Cobb almost a year ago, and Trey shut down the short-block sales and engine work very shortly thereafter. Many different opinions and theories abound as to what, if anything, really happened, but there is only one thing that is important. Trey Cobb has been a stand-up guy in every transaction that I've ever heard of, and I have never had a bad experience in dealing with anyone at his shop. Engine building is a highly specific enterprise, and while a lot of shops "do" it, or at least offer rebuild-services for their clients, it ain't for everyone. Cobb has decided to stick to what they do best, and leave this to others. Frankly, I think a lot of other small tuner shops would be well advised to follow suit and leave this to the guys who have the knowledge, expertise, and very expensive machine shop tools to do this professionally. Phil obviously has this, but not many other shops do. Me? I wouldn't any piece of that type of action. Think about it: you build a motor, knowing full well that some yahoo (like me) is going to do everything short of blowing it up on the dyno, and if it does, guess who's gonna catch the grief? Trust me guys, finger pointing games are flat ugly - there are NO winners. Bruce, you're not only taking this like a man, but as a gentleman as well. Dang it, amigo, you deserve a big turn of luck. |

IWSTI Addict since: Feb 2006 Trader Rating: (1) | ^^great post, I went with another oem block when i blew mine I love this build and I really appreciate Mr. Chapmans sharing of his build and being so gracious and teaching everyone so much..but this build is an example of why doing big builds can be WAYYYYYY to much for us young and monetarily challenged squirts Built blocks, cam's, going past stock oiling limits, are thing's I just know I can't do because odd's of failure are just....huge on our imprezas, or for all FI car's Last edited by MorePSiTehBett4; 06-19-2008 at 04:33 PM. |

IWSTI Addict since: Dec 2003 Trader Rating: (1) | at fly's prompt, i sent an e-mail to trey cobb notifying him of the autopsy results. the letter i received back from him is so impressive, i've asked for permission to post it. i hope he says yes because it speaks volumes about the man and the company with his name and because it is an example of how a man should handle things. |

IWSTI Addict since: Dec 2003 Trader Rating: (1) | permission granted. Thanks for the updates, Bruce. Again, really disappointed something like that left my shop and I have no problem accepting blame. At the end of the day, my name's on the door and I should be catching stuff like that. Let me know if there is anything else I can assist you with to help get you up and running ASAP. I'm out of the office today to attend a business meeting but if there's anything you or Phil need, just let me know and I'll get it handled ASAP. Thanks for the full disclosure, I appreciate it. Trey he wants to know what we need? we need every vendor in the business to have his mindset. that's what we need. Last edited by Neanderthal Racing; 06-20-2008 at 01:48 PM. |
