Yah. It was a fast type post, wasn't really paying attention. Either way, I guess where there's a will theres a way. I like mine. Until I have probs I'll keep using them

trey cobb is sending us a set of brand new bare CNC ported heads.

how freaking cool is that.
Bruce, Congrats on the new heads, I always knew there was something wrong with your old one

seriously though I'm glad to see that the tear down is progressing and that nothing major happened inside the motor. I'm sure you'll be able to get a new motor together in no time and be back on track tearing it up!!

update: motor autopsy

phil just called and told me to be sure i was sitting down. this is why:
  • the tolerances are in the area of 40 thou+
  • cyl 3 - something is wrong with the sleeve liner. phil had a hard time explaining it but it is definately wrong.
  • the arp head studs on one head are unevenly torqued with some no more than finger tight
  • cyl 3 has a leaking oem head gasket (there's our cooling issue)
  • cyl 4 - rod bearings are blown
  • cly 4(?) the piston is beat up from the valves striking it because it is protruding way past the clylinder deck
  • the rings were filed by hand rather than machined and they look it.
  • the oem crank was never crossdrilled as jeremy was supposed to do. the oil pressure issue is likely from the blown bearings.
  • the porting on the heads we already talked about
i am surely missing something. there were almost too many things wrong with this motor to mention and i didn't bother taking notes. the only thing we can likely salvage is the rods. even the crank is damaged on the #4 journal. we are ordering a new block, leaving it unsleeved and pretty much starting from scratch.

a couple of points and i am going to stick to them: 1) i am not speculating, dwelling on or discussing the condition of this motor. 2) this was a free motor and i am paying for the next one and 3) if anyone assigns blame to cobb, i'm going to smack him in the forehead like in that v8 commercial.

moving on...

everything in the engine bay and under the passenger footwell, jake.

update: heads

the new cobb heads are on their way to phil. delivery is sched for monday. we are going 1mm over on the new valves. the only old parts being transferred to the new heads are the cams.

also, the buckets are pretty scarred up from contact. all the tolerances are ok but the wear and tear is evident. phil has been seeing the same thing on his motor and he's got the same cams.

i haven't told trey a thing and won't. i know he already feels badly about the lousy headwork and i have absolutely no desire to compound it. this is not his problem, any more than a restaurant owner who hires a cook who spits in a customers food. he's as much a victim as i am. i thought twice about posting the story but it needed to be told.

this is the last thing i will say about the subject.

phil is getting a stock block for this motor. meanwhile, i still have my original stock block, which we will probably rebuild with the old heads for a plan "b" motor.

Sounds like some mofo put that motor togather.
