A protune should be good. Any more is just too risky for me...

Ya my point was your car is going to be fastAr than that. He had an EBC IIRC. Just man up and get a bigger turbo, just wait til you get promoted.

Short story: protuned (safe tune), 17.5 psi peak (starts at 2800 RPM ) and 280 whp/310 wtq.

Full story:
Well, Muffnbluff was supposed to get protuned tonight by Jorge (RiftsWRX) at P&L Motorsport near Chicago. He wasn't able to make it to Chicago in time for his appointment, so I ended up taking his protune spot. My major reason for getting the protune done was to get a safe, reliable tune for the car to take advantage of the turboback. I want this engine to last me a good while so I wanted a safe tune more than going for numbers. Of course, a little extra power wouldn't hurt either . I told Jorge this, and he went for consistency with the tune.

First they did three baseline pulls with the Cobb Stage 2 shelf map. The car put down around 275 whp and 290 wtq (which was surprising, because my car put down 263/273 on the same dyno when it was stock. Makes me wonder if P&L adjusted the dyno a bit to account for high readings. Tonight they said a tuned stage 2 puts down 270-290 whp and in the 300s for wtq ).

What surprised me about the shelf maps (and frankly, scared me) was that my car was detonating (early onset, of course) around 5500 RPM consistently. The dyno curve (I didn't get a copy of the shelf map's run) showed a very sudden drop (about 10 whp) at higher RPMs, and I could see a puff of black smoke come out the exhaust when it happend. I only drove on the shelf map for two weeks, but imagine the damage that could do! Jorge said that the ECU had learned to pull timing like nuts...

I asked about the stock fuel pump, because it seems that some (TopSpeed) recommends swapping in a better unit. Jorge said it isn't an issue. Initially he tuned it to run 18.5 psi, and at that pressure we saw about 287 whp and 320 wtq. As the engine got hot though, he started to see it pull timing, so he decided to play it safe and scale back a bit. He said that the TMIC is probably the limiting factor. The final tune is running at 17.5 psi, with full boost coming on at 2800 RPM IDCs were at 90-95% at 18.5 psi, but at 17.5 psi it's at 85%. No worries about the stock pump for me. (I do wonder though, how the hell does Doug run the VF39s at 19+ psi? I know he's good, but damn, I'd be a little worried about the longevity of my engine...).

After a few runs at 17.5 psi, he said that it was pulling timing a small amount at above 6000 RPM due to heat. He originally held AFRs to just under 12:1 all the way to redline, but in order to offset the pull in timing, he changed the AFR a bit so that it's at around 11.4:1 at redline.

He did several runs to make sure the tune was consistent, even made sure it wasn't pulling timing when the engine was pretty hot. During the last few runs, the timing advance multiplier was 1 consistently (that's a good thing ). The numbers we settled on were 280 whp and 310 wtq finally. I'm sure other tuners could milk some more ponies out of the tune, but like I said I wanted something safe, and I don't think Jorge made the tune super-agressive (which I'm completely ok with).

Here's my ghetto version of scanning the dyno plot (I took a picture of it ):

Driving impressions: well, I didn't get a chance to romp on it as much as I would have liked...but damn, the spool is awesome. I don't think there's any lag. The power just comes on so hard from low RPMs now...there's just power to be had everywhere. The dyno plot reflects this, too. I don't know yet if the top end feels different (no chance to test it), but 2-3-4 certainly felt smooth and the onset of power was very nice. Boost *might* be lower than the shelf map was, but I could care less since the engine isn't detonating now. I'm really glad I got the tune done, it makes me more confident that the car will run for a good long time.

I'm starting to think there's too much hype about the shelf maps; people just assume that it's designed to be safe for all cars (I certainly did). Jorge explained that something as simple as my intake silencer delete could mess up how the shelf map behaves. So I am now a Cobb + Protune whore...your car will be happier

Charged me for 2 hours of tuning time, by the way.
