Default Defi Install

Ok, here are my pics/thoughts/comments on the Defi install. Over the last two days I installed sensors, routed wires, and tapped for Defi BF Amber Imperial Boost and Oil Pressure gauges. I decided to use two of the three pods in a center pod (clock pod) and fill the 3rd hole with a gauge later. I also decided to route the wiring to the glovebox, after seeing how nicely everything came together for Josh's install (jsh139).

Glovebox, with boost (white clip) and oil pressure (black) sensor wires routed through the firewall:

The hole in the firewall at the back of the glovebox:

The firewall plug, in the engine bay. You can see I sliced a hole in it for the sensor wires:

First up, I installed the Boost sensor. I used the OEM Boost's T fitting because it didn't require hose reducers and other extra parts. Here's a comparison photo (OEM is blue, Defi T is white):

Since my car's BPV was already tapped for the OEM boost, all I did was attach the shorter piece of hose to the Defi sender, and route the sender wiring to the glovebox. I mounted my sender on the battery tiedown, just because it was easy to access, and won't get hot.

While installing the Defi boost, I decided to uninstall the OEM boost gauge. WOW that was a pain! First of all, I routed the long vacuum hose back into the passenger compartment (mechanical gauge, so it has a LONG hose). Look at what the factory/dealer used to plug the space around the hose in the firewall (it's sticky tack, not gum ):

I had to take apart the driver's side lower dash to get the OEM boost out as well. They used zip ties in the most rediculous places to hold the hose in place:

Also had to take the steering column trim off to get at the gauge. It was tight to get the screws for the gauge off, because the trim piece wouldn't come out far enough:

I'm very happy to have that gauge off, I finally can see my gauge cluster with an unobstructed view! (Not that the steering mount gauge was THAT intrusive...).

I also got the clock out while I was in the cabin. I thought I was surely going to break something yanking on it, but I finally got it out:

Next up, was the oil pressure sender install. I decided to go with the oil galley plug instead of the sandwich adapter, as it seemed like the cleanest option for installing, and the most accurate. It was a pain to get to the galley plug, but I finally got it out. I didn't seat the hex socket properly at first and almost stripped it! I got it out though, and here's the view:

Getting the sender in with the galley plug was an interesting time too. I'll elaborate later or when someone asks for details. Here's the sensor, installed. The one silver tube in the background is the turbo, and the black circle in the upper left is the throttle body:

I went with an ATI gauge pod because it was already color matched (a pretty good match) with the dash. I needed to fill the 3rd hole with something (until I buy a 3rd gauge) so that it wasn't just a gaping hole in the dash. I had some ideas, but I ended up doing something that I think turned out well and was relatively easy. I cut the blank black back of my Defi boost gauge's box, and shaped it to fit the backside of the 3rd gauge hole. I put a little bead of hot glue and held it in place. Here's how it looks (with flash photography...in sunlight it has a nice sheen like a blacked out gauge face):

And pictures of the install, finished:

I didn't have my tripod and it was late, I'll get some better pictures soon

Last but not least, I have to thank my buddy Josh (jsh139) for helping me out when I hit a little bump along the way with the Defis. I had wired everything as I was supposed to, and when I turned the car to igntition, the gauges would light and sweep, just like the main cluster. But then, they would go black! The values were reading properly, because I could see the needles moving, but the faces were dark. I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. So I started calling my IWSTI backup Luckily my e-support Jet was online and told me Josh was also online! Josh suggested that I might have had the gauge output wired to "meter output 1" instead of two. He was right...meter output one made the gauges go dark. I switched to two and everything was gravy. So pleased!

I might add more info later, but it's late and I wanted to get the pics up for the whores bugging me

EDIT: Here's the ScoobyMods thread I used for the Oil Pressure galley plug install. http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5513

Default Cobb Turboback

So after getting some nice deals on lightly used Cobb Tuning exhaust parts, I decided to go stage two. I went with the full Cobb catted turboback system, and decided to wrap and spray the downpipe to lower underhood temperatures. Here are pictures of that install:

The wrapped and sprayed downpipe:

The full Cobb turboback:

So we started the install by removing the heatshield and spraying the turbo with PB Blaster:

And here's the puddle of PB blaster under the car (in which I was lying for a while, while working on the exhaust):

After soaking for 30-45 minutes (we cut and ground the stock heatshield during that time) we managed to break the DP bolts and nuts free. The 5th one took us some time because it was hard to reach, but once we finally broke it free, I blurted out "PB BLASTER! FOR....THE WIN."

We then got the car up in the air to remove the rest of the bolts on the DP. As I said earlier, the transmission side nut was HARD to get off.

Me, hard at work on some part of the downpipe :

Around 11 pm yesterday, I was finally happy to see this:

After pulling it out, I used my trusty breaker bar to remove the O2 sensor from the stock DP. I used a NAPA O2 socket that I bought, and it was cake.

After that we got the rest of the OEM catback off. What a rusted piece of crap!

Day two, we started putting the Cobb Turboback on. The install process was quite fast, and we were happy with how easily things came together. The downpipe in place:

Another view of the DP from underneath:

The catback section went on like cake, it was SO much easier than getting the OEM one off the hangers. We noticed that we had to stretch the hangers down a bit to get the Cobb CBE onto the hangers. Easy, nonetheless.

Another view of the downpipe and wrap:

The money shot :

After finishing the TBE, I did the intake snorkus delete and installed a GP moto intake elbow (sounds pretty nice!). Also swapped the gold wheels on, and finished wiring the Defis up.

We made sure the Defis were working, and while I buttoned up the dash and glovebox, I reflashed to stage two :

Check out my uber sweet garbage bag seat covers Garage gunk will stay off my seats thanksssss

I love the sound. Deep, not too obnoxious, but definitely present. I only got a short test drive in, as I finished the car about 4 hours ago and it's 4:30 a.m. EST

I still need to detail the car, so hopefully I'll have some nicer pictures of everything soon!

Thanks Jet!

You know guys, it was a long two days, and I was definitely tired last night (but excited, as I slept at 5 am EST). I really enjoyed it. It was a pain sometimes, but the challenge appealed to my engineering side and we got things done without breaking anything. Good learning experience for sure!

I have like double the pictures I posted, so if you want to see something, chances are I have a good shot of it

Thanks Chris! I'll see about borrowing the parents' video camera But honestly, videos don't do the Cobb TBE justice. You have to hear it in person. First time I heard one in person was mine, last night

It's loud enough that I couldn't hear the shift buzzer at WOT in 5th! And settles down to a nice rumble when taking it easy. I'm very happy.

Thanks UGB Half the fun is sharing what I did, and based on how much of a photo whore I am I couldn't resist

I have to give HUGE credit to everyone that's pioneered the way for me though. My laptop was in the garage, and I was checking information on IWSTI and ScoobyMods (didn't need to go to NASIOC ) the whole time (not to mention bugging Josh on Google Talk for help!). to this community and all the people out there who have taken time to help Subaru n00bs like me out with detailed writeups

Of course...if it wasn't for you whores I wouldn't have anything to install...I'd still be stock

I wish I could make the Tune in June, but I can't (too long of a drive, other commitments, etc.)

I agree 100%!! At first I wasn't so sure about the Cobb TBE but decided to go for it after Ben practically made me get it. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, who has seen / heard it thinks the sound is perfect, the volume is perfect, and it looks perfect. It is also pretty hard to argue that the design (especially of the DP), the fit, and the quality isn’t the best out there.

I am glad everything went smoothly for you. You’re going to love the car more and more! Congrats man! Go celebrate!
