I'm bored and I thought I would post some pics of the progress I've made on my little winter project. At a local suby meet Jason (valvetrain engineer) showed me his titanium Typhoon heat shield. He wasnt satisfied with the steel piece from KN.
Being the engineer dork that I am i decided that I wanted a lightweight pretty heat shield and decided to make one out of carbon fiber.
I'm going to post my progress in this post.
The heat shield is going to be made out of 2 layers of carbon, in between the layers i'm going to put the 3 metal tabs to bolt it in. These will most likely be made of thin gauge stainless.
I made the mold of the heat shield using two layers of automotive fiberglass mat and resin. The mold was prepped and wet sanded up to 800grit so my carbon part will be nice and smooth.
Here are some pics of the mold

and my carbon supplies

I'll be making the metal tabs tomorrow, and laying the carbon out this weekend. I'll post pics and details of my progress.

enjoy!

A guy in pennsylvania on the honda boards was offering a kit for people interested in doing CF on their own so I jumped in. Its pretty fun, I can definately see myself making more things.

Well you will be able to see detailed pics of the final product in this post. Selling a couple may be an option if they come out top notch, as I wouldnt want to sell a lackluster product. I would also have to work out the details with the owner of the forums as I'm not a vendor.
When its finsihed i'll PM you details, and we'll see what happens.

RoninSTi,
First, great job with the mold and project...it looks great. One suggestion, if you are going to go through the process of molding and laying up the c/f, why not continue and make a full airbox? Other than ITG Air Filters(waaaay too expensive), I don't know of any company that makes an airbox for a shortie, let alone a carbon fiber one. And if it looks as good as that fiber mold would suggest, you're Kung Fu is good  , you'd probably be overrun with demand.
Good luck with your project!
Be good,

One other thought. If you mix in a cardboard cup, make sure you use one that doesn't have a wax coating.

Also, I prefer West System epoxy over vinylester or polyester resin. Epoxy doesn't continue to shrink after its cured. The other resins seem to continue to shrink over time. just my .02

Nice angel, is that a future hood ornament??

Seriously nice job, just try not to stink up the house too bad with that stuff. Hmm, I could throw a layer of carbon in the inside of my Ti facing the filter for less conduction... Seriously I'd like to tackle another winter project - carbon fiber side cowl braces. Where'd you buy the supplies from?

Thanks for the compliments guys!!

As far as the airbox idea is concerned...I would love to try it. If this shield comes out nice I think that will be my next project. More updates tomorrow as I'm fabricating the metal tabs at my dads shop, should be laying the carbon saturday.

ValvetrainEngineer - are you talking about the braces on the inside of the fender that STi makes out of aluminum that are like $$350?? Because if so I was thinking about doing the same thing. I'll make a mold of those things this weekend and try that out.

Good site, thanks Don! Some things you just can't (or shouldn't) find on ebay...

Does anybody make a fake CF for just cosmetic purposes? No sense in spending dough on the real stuff if you don't need it.
