Default brey-krause fire extinguisher mount

i've been looking for a good place to mount my fire extinguisher, so that it's out of the way and easily accessible. i found this mount made by brey-krause that looks pretty nice.

http://www.bkauto.com/subaru/r2315.php

anyone have one of these that can offer up a review? it says it will work with a 2.5lb extinguisher. i have a 3lb abc extinguisher from home depot right now. will this extinguisher work with this mount?

thanks

lokutus1:

I have that fire extinguisher mount in my '05 STi. I also used it in my '02 WRX.

It is very well made and installs easily.

I can't remember if I also ordered a fire extinguisher directly from them (I've purchased 3 or 4 over the last few years for several different cars) or if I ordered it from OG Racing. The important thing in purchasing a fire extinguisher for mounting in your vehicle is to make sure it has a metal bracket rather than a plastic bracket. It's also preferable to find one that has two retaining straps rather than a singe retaining strap.

FYI - Several of the Porsche schools that I've done require a hard mounted fire exinguisher. This is a very secure, metal-to-metal mounting bracket that is located (at least in my case) at the front of the passenger seat. It is completely out of sight during day to day use.)

thanks gary! the extinguisher i have has a plastic bracket and a single strap. i think i'm going to get one of the amerex 2.5lb dry chemical extinguishers. it has a metal bracket and two straps. brey-krause says it will fit their mount too.

do you have aftermarket seats? i have bride gias seats, and they sit pretty low. i also have my seat pretty far forward, so i don't think it will mount under the driver's side. i think i'm going to have to slide the passenger seat all the way back to get it to work.

Kevin:

Amerex is the fire extinguisher I have. I couldn't remember until you mentioned it, then the lightbulb turned on over my head as soon as I saw it in writing.

I have my bracket mounted and I'm using the factory seats. I haven't had any clearance issues. My passenger seat will slide all the way forward before it makes contact with the extinguisher bottle. I'm pretty sure I've never had anyone sit in the car with the seat that far forward. So I'd say that clearance with the factory seat is a non-issue.

The mounting bracket attaches to the bolts where the front seat attaches to the floorpan. The extinguisher is held a bit out to the front and down. It essentially sits on the floor. I believe my floor mat will squeeze under the fire extinguisher. But my bad weather rubber mat won't.

Good luck with the install.

I'll be picking one of those mounts up, along with a 2.5lb Halon extinguisher. I'd recommend getting rid of your extinguisher and switching to Halon. It's more expensive but it will put out chemical fires more quickly and it won't corrode electrical components.

I had considered getting Halon but a buddy of mine who is a trusted source for information on many topics changed my mind.

His argument was that while Halon might be fine for an engine compartment fire where you're standing outside the car, it wasn't appropriate for use inside the car while you're in it He cited the theoretical example where you're on-track and a fire breaks out and after you've stopped the car, you're either unable to get out because of body damage, injury, etc. and you're forced to deploy the extinguisher while seated in the car.

If I remember correctly, Halon isn't safe for humans to breathe.

Accordingly, I went with a standard fire extinguisher.

Not sure I agree with that, seeing as how all of the in-car fire suppression systems use Halon as well.

You may very well be correct.

I needed to get a bracket and extinguisher purchased in a hurry as I was traveling prior to an upcoming drivers' school.

Since my buddy had already gone through the thought process on extinguisher alternatives, I piggybacked on his research and decision-making.

I'll try to do some additional research at a later time.

Thanks for the feedback.

Scroll about halfway down, it's the Halon 1211, 2.5 lb.

found this on the web.

"Exposure to Halon 1211 or Halon 1301
The effects of Halon 1211 and Halon 1301 on humans have been studied extensively. Halon 1211 and Halon 1301 are not considered carcinogens or cancer-suspect agents according to state and federal regulatory agencies. However, since Halon is heavier than air it may function as a simple asphyxiant by displacing air in a closed space. High levels of exposure to Halon 1211 or Halon 1301 may result in symptoms including lightheadedness, giddiness, shortness of breath, cardiac irregularity, and unconsciousness. These symptoms are reversible and will disappear if the victim is removed from the area of exposure."

halon is a cfc though and depletes the ozone, so it's not made in the U.S. anymore. it is recycled though for use in fire extinguishers and such due to the fact that there is no good way to safely dispose of it. there are several substitutes for halon that are more environmentally friendly. the main one i found for fire extinguishers is halotron.

amerex also makes different sized halotron extinguishers. here's a link to them on safedrives:

Agreed, Halotron is a good alternative. It's not as easy to find as Halon but I imagine it will be phased in soon enough. Motorsports is far from environmentally friendly to begin with but I suppose every little bit counts
