Default What does the first hash mark on the fuel gauge indicate?

Does anyone know what the first hash mark on fuel gauge signifies (e.g. 2 gallons/liters)? I'm tired of having to wait until it gets to half a tank before I can calculate my gas mileage.

Ummm...what? Doesn't the gas pump tell you how much gas you put in? Just fill it up...drive for 100 miles then fill it up again. Then divide the number of miles by the number of gallons needed to fill it up again.

Easy way to calcualte your MPG (atleast how I do it)

1. Fill up
2. Reset your trip meter
3. Drive!
4. When you feel the need to fill up again do so
5. Divide the total number of miles you drove (for example 200) by the number of gallons you used to fill up.

(number of miles driven) / number of gallons used to fill up

Mine tank is strange and sometimes does not always fill all the way up...

I would add, "then repeat". Calculating the MPG on one tank has limited value as there are so many variables that could play a part in this. To mention one, not all gas pumps are exactly alike so they may cut off at slightly different fuel tank levels. Figuring your MPG over a number of tanks will give you a better idea. I keep track of both the last tank's MPG and over teh life of the car by using a simple spreadsheet. I enter the date, mileage and gallons bought into my PDA and then sync this to my laptop where the spreadsheet does all the calculations for me. (With over 280 fill-ups on my 2004, the PDA takes to long to recalculate the spreadsheet after each new entry!)

What is this, first maybe second grade math? Seriously if you can't figure out how to calculate MPG you have more serious problems then gas prices.
