there were THREE things that killed off the American Musclecar. one was the creation of emmisions standards, who wanted a V8 with 140 horses. the second was the gas crunch of the early 70's, who wants a car that gets 10mpg when gas prices were at an all time high, if you could even get it. and finally, INSURANCE RATES!!!!!! the Big 3 were in a horsepower war and some cars were posting upwards of 400 horsepower bone stock..of course all these numbers were at the flywheel. Insurance companies began taking notice and started slapping insanely high rates on these cars and people stopped buying them. this was also the same time that auto manufacturers started advertising horsepower at the rear wheels to make the numbers appear less dangerous. there is something to be learned from the past.

Default interested in car

My insurance went down when I bought the car. I used to have a 2000 Honda Passport. I guess I got lucky. Progressive has been very nice to me with their rates and service.

Here are some quotes I got from my insurance agent today. STRONGLY considering the STi as my next car. I'm 25, have a house, two cars, and life insurance all under the same insurance company. Right now I pay about $100 a month for my Boxster. The below amounts are monthly payments. I currently have no points on my license.

2004 Honda S2000 - $129.70
2004 Nissan 350Z - $104.02
2004 Subaru WRX STi - $101.05
2002 BMW M3 - $116.23
2003 Corvette Z06 - $126.08

Magnum, I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico near Tramway and Commanche. Insurance quotes in this part of town are night and day versus the student ghetto. I believe you can multiply all of my above numbers by two if you live in the wrong zip code. This makes sense since everyone I have ever known that has lived in the student ghetto near the University has had their car broken into.

Wow - how the hell does no one on here have any tickets? I'm 23, looking to get an STi later this year and have prepared myself to pay a stupid amount for insurance. I currently drive an 02 Civic Si. I've already had like 10+ speeding tickets. I figured STi drivers to be similarly seduced by speed.....how fast do you guys drive?

Everyone speeds but it is how you do it that makes a difference. If you are being dangerous and tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic, or in general making yourself more visible, yeah you'll get a ticket. If you blend in with everyone else, you'll be fine. Granted, blending with the STi might be a little hard...though a Civic or RSX should be easy.

Usually I only speed on the highway - at most 20km/h over; on public roads I go at most, 10km/h -12km/h over (depending on the area and posted limit etc.) I'll never speed through a school or residential zone though.

BTW My insurance is only going up $9/month from $148/month to $157/month. (CDN) It is still a little bit high, but that is because I started driving a littler later in life (early twenties - don't ask .) I've had no accidents and no tickets. I'm 28 (June 7th baby!)

I had a friend's radar detector for one trip home from school a couple years ago and sure enough, I still got a ticket. He must have been hauling cause he paced me from behind.

I honestly never speed in dangerous nor stupid situations. I spent high school and college driving all over the midwest for hockey, though....tons of highway miles which is where almost all my tickets were.

And yeah, that was always in a Civic (I had two others before my Si) so I shouldn't have been that conspicuous and I know I will be in a blue STi....I've just become resigned to the fact that I get tickets - kinda a periodic fee I agree to pay to always drive fast.

I pay way more for insurance now than anyone on here does for an STi and I've got no accidents. I'm getting married next month which will help. Oh well, they can tell me it will be $4k a year and I'm still going to have an STi......
