doesnt the amount you pay in insurance all depend on where you live, what your driving record is, and more importantly the amount(s) of coverage you purchase?

Most people don't realize that which product and tier the are placed in has a huge impact on their premium. They tend to focus on points and coverages. Insurance companies rarely mention which product and tier their insured is placed in.

Product/tier factors: credit score, NON at fault accidents, prior lapses in coverage and liability limits on previous policies.

Someone with a low credit score and minimum liability limits will possibly be written into a non-standard(high risk) product/tier. Someone in this type of product/tier with a perfect driving record could end up paying more for car insurance then someone in a standard or preffered product with tickets and accidents.

As stated above, NON at fault accidents and comprehensive claims can affect which product/tier you are placed in. These do not add points to your policy, but if you are placed in a non-standard product/tier you will pay more on your premium then if you are placed in a standard or preffered product.

A good way to improve your product and tier is to have at least 6 months of continuous coverage without a lapse, improve your credit score, have a policy with higher then minimum liability limits for at least six month, and avoid non-at fault accidents if possible (don't brake hard when someone is riding close, etc)

Some insurance companies will not raise your product/tier despite improvements in the factors listed above. Some only re-tier after 1 year or 2 year renewals. That is why it is always in your best interest to get quotes from different companies before every renewal. Your current company may not re-tier you, but that doesn't mean another company won't write you in a better product/tier.

Other factors not related to product/tier:

Age of driver, gender of driver and marital status, and homeownership.

Factors which can add points to your policy are:

At fault accidents, collision claims, and moving violations.

Hope this helps.

I was paying ~$120 a month with USAA in Alabama for the STI and wifeys Jetta but when I moved to Louisiana it went up to ~$180. Was told the rate hike was due to all the hurricane damaged stuff down in New Orleans (as if I was even near there when it happened-we were living in Colorado and I was deployed to Iraq). I'm a little pissed that they're using me to help recoup the cash outlay from the hurricane but all the insurance companies here are doing it. Now I pay $217 a month for the two cars and homeowners ins.

On my insurance co scale of 1-26,my STI is a 28.
Go figure.
I got my insurance co to sell me $12,000 in mods insurance for $135 a year, for my STI.
It took them 2 days to figure out algorythms to insure STI mods, and $12k was their max.
With the new GramLights ltd.ed.TimeAttack 57OPTs and RE050As I'm well over that, but $12k on top of the book value in the event of a total wreck will certainly help.
The STI is basically an off-the-showroom floor rally car,and the VAST majority of them sold to people under 35 get wrecked. Hard.
In the NE,the STI is known as a 'upper-middle-class,trust fund Ferrari',for all the frat boys
that rip around Bah-stun in 'em.
Insurance companies deal in facts.
Kids drive these.
Kids destroy 'em.
Nasty Insurance stats = trickle down for all other STI owners.
Cops LOVE that big ol' Wing...I added a vortex generator and I'd rather lose a limb than put the r. spoiler back on. Ever.
300hp cars for people under 30 are expensive for a reason. When I was younger I drove like a bat out if hell & paid my huge INS. premiums, after 35 you save mad $$....
