Default Insurance talk.

So my friend and i were debating on what my insurance would cover if i were to get in an accident. I have many aftermarket parts, would insurance replace these parts if i have the receits for them, or do i have to tell them about the parts right when i get them? anyone know?

yes I know and the simple answer is no! Most insurance only covers what the cost would be to replace the car back to the "stock" condition was. There are a few companies out there that will provide you a "rider" that would cover additional items but it costs, plain and simple. Don't feel bad, I have almost $40K in mods and if something bad happened I would get paid for a stock 05 STI minus depreciation....

I have progressive and I know they will cover the first $1000 worth of parts. After that I am not sure what happens. I think you have to pay extra premium for more.

I work for State Farm and I am pretty sure that they dont cover mods.

sidenote...not a hijack. I have heard that some homeowner's insurance covers the loss of items stolen from a car. I believe this only applies to things that aren't part of the car. So a head unit that isn't installed would be covered, but one that is won't.

when i got in accident long time ago, they covered every parts, like carbon fiber hood, intake, wheels, strut, etc.-it was my celica. and it wasn't my fault.
Remember factory parts costs more than after market parts, so get money for factory parts buy you aftermarket part when you get check from them.
only thing it would not cover is probably front mount intercooler

I suppose if you get a check from the insurance company to fix your car you could do what you wanted with it and use it to buy aftermarket parts.

I know for a fact that state farm will use quality recycled parts or aftermarket parts before going with OEM because it saves them money. Sometimes the aftermarket parts are cheaper and have a better warranty.

Yes, progressive does cover 1000$ of bolted down aftermarket parts. If you are someone that has 10k in mods in the car or even 40k, you can get a stated amount policy that will cover everything thing you claim on the policy, yes it costs more, but think about it. One bad splitt second and your 40k in mods become salvage yard gold!! And also, if insurance companies totle your car, you can purchase the car from them for salvage value(roughly 20% of acv depending on condition of vehicle and type of accident)

I have state farm. I had a run in with a dog a few years back in my s-10. They paid for my aftermarket front valence and a few other small things that was already on the truck. I'm not real sure if they have a limit to the $ amount of aftermarket parts they cover, but i'll bet they probably do. Also the valence did cost more than the oem part and the other parts were not on the truck from the factory. They didn't say a word about the parts. They found out what the parts cost and cut me a check.
