^^^ Interesting. I went from an R32 to STI and my rates went up; strange. But over on the VW forums there were always complaints about peoples cars' being fixed with non-OEM parts of lower quality (non-german glass without the bluish tint, crap lights, etc...) at body shops and when people complained some insurance companies basically said 'tough-luck'. I actually specifically called USAA after that and asked If I get into an accident will all parts possible be replaced with OEM, and they said YES. So, thats good.

USAA wants 1,400 every six months from us, which is to say the least a bit much. Progressive on the other hand has quoted me 980 if I pay up front and 1,111 for six months paid monthly.

So, yesterday I called USAA and asked if they could do better, thinking they would say no and I'd cancel my policy with them. Well, the rep said she would contact the underwritters and have them give me a call. When she mentioned it she said something to the effect of "we might be able to meet or beat that". I expect a call back from the underwritters by friday.

Has anyone else done this with their insurance co? One of the things I'm worried about is that for the next renewal they'll lower it to 1,100 or something but then bump it up in the next 6 months thinking I won't notice.

I'll keep you posted. Maybe this'll save someone else some money.

I was in the same boat...USAA was able to go a few hundred lower than the other company i was looking at. On a side note, they have always been a good company to me and that matters most IMO

The thing with USAA is that they are a MUTUAL company. That means that they are owned by their policy holders.

They do not make a profit. They base their rates on what they think they need to in order to break even. If your rates are high with them, it is because they think you are a greater risk than possibly other companies.

The botom line is still what your premium, but USAA is not "the man". If they make a profit at the end of the year, they rebate it to their customers.

I agree with all the USAA customers. I've had them for twenty years and they really are there for you anytime you need them. You get what you pay for. And the rebate checks are always a nice surprise. I would never give up service with them.

I had USAA before i had my STI, i paid 129 for full cover on a 98 200sx. As soon as i got my STI (i have 4 points on my liscene currently)they wanted $512 a month. I was in two non-fault accidnets when i was 18 (side swipped and hit from behind. i am 23 right now. I absolutely love USAA, never had my rates increase (well except going from my rents policy to my own) and got great service when i had claims. But obviously i had to drop them in terms of insurance because the quote, so i went progressive. I intend to go back to USAA when the drop the rates more (last quote was at $290, which was last weekend). I learned it takes 5 year's to get rid of accidents so next year i should be good. The thing that gets me is i have my checking account with them and a loan for my car with them and that is a lot of money.

Ok, so I said I would follow up and I owe you guys a follow up:

I called on the original date of the original post and was told that something was sent to the underwritters and I would hear back by Friday. I was also told by the rep that she would call me to confirm that I heard from an underwritter. Neither of these things happen. So I called late on Friday and someone else sent a message to underwritting. A couple of days later I finally got a competent rep. She got in touch with underwritting and called me back the next day. I faxed her a quote from progressive, which was a bit higher than their previous quote. Later that day the same rep called me and told me she spoke with underwritting and said I was getting their "preffered rate". Then it got kinda awkward because she said stuff like, "well I really don't want you to leave" in a mild cutesy voice and lots o awkward silence. So, I said something like, "I'll discuss it with my wife, but 1,400 every six months is way too much and saving about a $1000 a year means I could go a on a short vacation or help pay off my car."

So I've been hunting around for a better deal. So far the best look to be esurance which did the online quote thing at like 970 for 6 months and state farm which is 1014 for 6 months. I just spoke with a state farm agent and she said i could get 864 every six months if i got with them for home owners insurance (and they can do that 2 dollars a year cheaper). I think i'll go with them and check back with USAA every year.

I just got my updated policy from progressive and had a $30 a month reduction because one of my tickets came off my record, I pay $882 every six months which is cheap for me.

USAA is great... especially for GIs, which is their primary focus. USAA has been the cheapest for for a long time. I check on other companies from time to time and USAA can't be beat.

I pay roughly the same for the STi, as I did for my Bugeye. My total insurance bill comes up to less than $700 for two cars. I have two tickets from over 2 years ago hat get dropped off this winter, I expect even lower rates hen. I'm 34 y/o so that has a lot to do with my lower rates.

Consider the fact that USAA will also cover me while living in germany, and it's hands down the best deal in town.

I think it may be my age that is the determining factor here. I'm 23. I figure it might be cheaper to switch back to usaa when i turn 25.

stirobot,
you raise a good point about doing homeowners with auto. We save a LOT by doing everything through one company. My auto is $1200/yr for the STi and a Miata. But we're both older, don't use the cars for work, and have clean records.
