Question Would you pay $418 to insurance your car for 2 weeks?

hey hope everyone is enjoying the holidays and possibly some snow I am a college student and i am coming home for two weeks for the holidays. Since the college i go to does not allow freshmen to bring their cars, my STi is home where my dad drives it once in while to keep me from having to do everything neccessary to store it for a few months.
i am put into a dilemma however because my insurance company (GMAC) only gives rates per month. i am only home for two weeks, and i cant get the half price discount which really sucks because my insurance is $418 a month (NJ rate for male, 19 with NO tickets) this insurance is ridicolous and i was wondering if any of you had advice on what to do. after all, this is my only time home this year with the STi so i want to drive it, especially with the Pirelli snow tires i put on it. also my brother said he would let my borrow his 96' accord when i need to get to work so i have access to another car. I am leaning to putting my STi back on insurance because i miss driving it so much. i was just seeking any opinions or advice on a what to do. thanks

If you're going to drive it, be responsible and insure it. You would want others to do the same, right? Yes, your rate sucks, but it's the right thing to do.

Yeah I think its time to change insuarance, start looking. There has to be a much better rate than that.

Get some other quotes. I have progressive and I pay $996 per 6 months for 2 people and 2 cars (05 STi and 04 Explorer). The progressive quote is BY FAR the cheapest I've gotten, so shop around!

Take a look at esurance or safeauto.

I agree. That is way too much if you have a clean record (no tickets / accidents).

An alternative would be to have you as a secondary driver and primary your father, this should drop the rates.

Good luck

I would let it sit in the driveway/garage for that price. It's not worth it for that short ammount of time NO WAY!! Just think, you will have 2 weeks fewer miles on it when you do start driving it.

4 accidents, 2 tickets, and my Insurance rate just dropped with an accident free discount... ACCIDENT FREE DISCOUNT!! I pay 94.00 a month.. (Wait 'til I renew and they catch that slip though)

No one pays more for insurance than a male teenage in NJ. I don't think rates from PA and TX are particularly applicable. That said definitely call around for other quotes.

Does your dad have any kind of insurance on it given that he is taking it out on occasion? If so I don't think it would be a big deal for you to use it, but you might let the insurance company know... If there is no insurance on the car, period, then no.... one mishap could seriously screw up your entire life.

I would say don't bother, just save the $418 bucks for something else. That's almost a tune among other things.

thanks for the advice guys. i have been looking around. it is very difficult to find a company to insure a single, male, age 19 with an STi as his only car (THE BIGGEST REASON I PAY SO MUCH IS MY DRIVERS LICENSE IS NJ). next year i will be a resident of PA hopefully and change my license to save money. also, right now my STi does NOT have insurance on it b/c it is just sitting in our garage while i am at school. i am on my dad's car as an occassional driver, but my complaint to the insure company is why do i have to pay for a full month if i only want to insure my STi for 2 weeks???? i wish there was someway for me to get a discount b/c i havent driven the STi since august and i am going through withdrawl. i just dont have $418 to throw around. thanks again for the advice.

just a question, how old are you? if you are under 25, or even 40 that's impossible.
when my sti was in my moms name with her insurance(no ticket, noaccident) it was still 100$ a month. there is no way you can get that good of deal. and i did check with progressive and it was still 100$. and this was with 500 deductible.

im 20 right now and im paying 250 a month(no accident no ticket).

Start the insurance the day you get there and then cancel it the day you leave and they should reinburse you for the remaineder of the month. I know that I've gotten credits that way from insurance companies when I've switched. You have to pay it all up front but would get some of it back.
