Default sti insurance! please help!

Hey all. so i am 17 and am insured with AIG...

i pay 4,700 a year and i just feel badly for my parents so i am looking to do something!

i do not drive more than 10,000 a year.. so i was wondering i could be considered a part time driver.. and i do not commute in the car daily.. just wondering what option there is.

Is it insurance fraud if i were to say i am on a passat that no one drives? i would not be driving it but it is just another car. i would assume it is cheaper for me to say a passat than my moms benz or dads porsche..

just looking for some help from you guys that have had to deal with insurance for so long

If you are 17, drive a STI, and have all those mods, then you don't get much symapthy from me about your insurance rates. Heck, I'm 24 and I think my insurance is outrageous for the STI. It is part of owning a car like this.

To really get an answer to your question, you should probably call your insurance agent.

Based on your parents' cars, that must be an awesome garage. You are very lucky to be able to drive a car such as the STI. Now I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that this car was bought for you. I'm guessing you didn't work your butt off at a part time job to save to 30Gs to purchase it. Keep in mind this also puts you into a class where *statistically* you are more likely to get into an accident simply because you didn't work your butt off to buy something. Typically if you work for something, then it has more value and thus gets taken care of more. I'm sorry if this sounds a little harsh, but its life. At age 17, your primary car is a sports car. Yeah, your insurance will be high.

If your parents have no problem paying for it, why you do?

Insurance rates aren't based on amount of assets. If you parents have a lot of their assets insured with the same company, then you better believe that those rates are going to be much lower. Having multilines of insurance with mulitiple cars (why I have a $300 86 escort saves me over 1200 a year). Talk with other insurance agents with different types of company. Also, it sounds like your parents have some cash so why not make your deductable higher to $1000 or to $2000. That will save you quiet a bit. If an agency says that a defensive driving course would drop it, do it! Also grades help. Don't get your hopes up to getting down to 1500 a year, you are still 17 and soooooooo many teens die in cars. I am only 24 but I feel that age still sometimes. I have a little bro that is the same age. We put him in a bugeye wrx to get him started. He loves it and has learned. Good luck.

There are a number of things you can do to lower your insurance. Many insurance companies have good student discounts for getting a certain GPA or for academic honors. I know, because when I was in high school I got these discounts too. Also, if your state starts you with points on your licence, or you have any from tickets, take a safe driving course to get some points deducted. Also, if you are insured on your parent's vehicles, and they drive nice cars, that will significantly increase your yearly dues. My brother is in college and has his own insurance that the parents cover because it actually costs less to have a seperate policy on him just for his car than having him on the family plan covering all our cars. In the end it is all about finding out what discounts a variety of companies will give you and seeing what makes the best sense for you. A little research will go a LONG way towards your goal.

Recently, I switched insurance companies. The one I was with for seven years upped the rate to 2400 a year. I'm 33 and a homeowner (house is insured through them as well.) Apparently, they reclassified the STi, and are now trying to shake me down for more bread.

My new insurance company charges me $850 a year. I also have more coverage. Shop around, but keep in mind that you are 17 and insurance is going to be really high for you.

i believe, not unless you are an "emancipated" minor.

i've had a little time to think about it since talking to you.

the reason insurance companies insist that the policyowner list each person who lives in the household is because they automatically assume everyone in the house will drive all the cars listed on the policy, i.e., you are driving the porsche, etc., even if youre not. i'm not sure lying about it will make any difference if you use the same address. you are, at 17 are the lowest common denominator, rate-wise, in the household (unless one of the others in-house has a seriously messed up driving record). the insurance won't change for your parents until you move out permanently. your rate probably wouldn't change much either way.

i would look into those academic discounts and check out other companies. it could be worse. you could be in nj.

NJ isn't that bad :-p...while my insurance is still pretty high...im not paying anywhere near 4700 a year...I was always under the assumption though that if you could pay for the insurance, it doesn't matter what age you are to be able to hold a policy. When I first started driving, I had a friend who bought a brand new hyundai, and if I recall correctly he had his own policy, paying his own insurance, and we were 17. I might be mistaken, and perhaps it differs from agency to agency..

I called Geico to cancel. I told them that I was going to move to another company, I had a quote in hand from Progressive that was WAY less than my current rate. Geico gave me a big break, now I pay about $1,200 / yr (this is down from over $2,000 / year). I know that won't happen if you're 17, but $4,700 still sounds a bit high.

The point is just that a phone call might save you a lot of $$ if you can back up your story with a competitive quote from another insurance co.

Oh yeah, you guessed it, I'm old, that's why I only pay $1,200 insr / yr for an STi.
