When I was in high school I was on the family insurance policy and doubled what my parents were already paying.

I have been shopping around for insurance for my future purchase of and STi and Geico quoted me double what Progressive did. 1200/6 mnths at Geico and 673 at Progressive. I am 25 in NY and have 2 speeding tickets from 2 years ago. not more than 10mph over the speed limit. I also took a driving course to get the points subtracted.

Word. . . rates for a 17-year old are going to be based almost solely on two things: 1. Driving record, and 2. Car being insured. When you're that age, the liability coverage is where you get assraped.

Even if you could get your rates reduced, one little speeding ticket that sticks, and kiss your rates goodbye.

Incidentally, I went from paying $1200 a year for the STi . . . to right around $1000 a year for the LGT.

Geico gave me a big break, now I pay about $1,200 / yr (this is down from over $2,000 / year). I know that won't happen if you're 17, but $4,700 still sounds a bit high.

The point is just that a phone call might save you a lot of $$ if you can back up your story with a competitive quote from another insurance co.

If you have an accident don't expect Progressive to be there. They have the worst record for customer satisfaction of any insurance provider. They will try to loop hole their way out of paying and will bury you in red tape and legal hassles until you simply give up. There's a reason they offer the cheapest insurance out there and why they will insure anyone...if you don't pay the claims you don;t have to charge as much. You get what you pay for and with Progressive you get nothing.

Just my 2 cents.

Just makes me appreciate being 30 yrs old and only paying $800/yr. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this...didn't read through the thread, but have your mom or dad be the primary driver and you the secondary, should reduce your payment.

yea 18 here, nearly 19, and i pay about the same you do adam (well, my parents do). but besides good grades, and taking driving class and lessons, theres not much you can do when your a teenager, and those things wont lower it that much. i just feel damn lucky that my parents are willing to pay for insurance so i can keep the car. but i hear ya.

If you really want to lower your insurance, have one of your parents as the primary driver and you as the secondary. Have them listed as the one who drives teh car the most that way if something happens your still covered in the car 100% and u have a way lower rate. I do that and i pay less than 100 a month for my WRX

I must step in the group and also believe 4700 is high. When I was 17, I had a brand new GS-R with too many tickets and accidents. I can honestly say it was too much car for me at the time... I only paid 200/mo. Now, in my late 20's, I have a perfect record and pay just over 100/mo for the STi (500 deduct. 125k/125k/125k).

I would see if you can get your parents as the primary drivers and you as the secondary. This should help drop the rate. Also, as mentioned, check and see if there are ways to get additional dedictions (good student, DD, Driver's Ed.). I was able to qualify for all to help keep my insurance rates in check.

Good luck

i got quoted 27k/year for my r1.... 4700 is chump change compared to that... but after shopping around i pay only 500/year now...

shop around if u want ur own insurance, but i doubt it will go down.... they base some things on credit score too... do u have credit, if not start building it.. ur best bet is to have ur dad or someone be the primary and you be a secondary driver.... good luck.

I pay 3600 a year and just recently had to get rid of collision to keep the same price because I moved to Denver from Fort Collins.

BTW while you all are typing that I just saved money on my insurance by switching to GEICO - you caaannn dddooooo it!

Ages 16-20 (high risk) = high insurance
Ages 16-20 (high risk) + Perfomance car = Really high insurance

Here a couple tips about insurance:

1) You can only be rated as secondary driver if you have less cars than drivers in your household. ex: 2 cars 3 drivers

2) If you buy a vehicle and say it is your primary car and your STI is your "pleasure" car to lower your premiums......make sure when your insurance sends you the "random information update" forms, you remember to make your mileage look like what you've told them!

3) Vehicles are rated in categories as well as drivers. You can't compare any other rates of vehicles other than the STI. ex: comparing wrx with STI premiums. Two totally different categories.

4) Find an Agent that you can talk to. Young Male Agents (being stereotypical here) will be more sympathetic to you owning a cool car and help structure your policy to get you the best deal. If they enjoy doing what they do.....they'll give you all the "inside" information on insurance!

Lastly....It is a SPORTS car! Don't expect exceptional gas mileage or cheap insurance. Go buy a Honda if you want those benefits from a car!!!
