Default Got 'intrusive' call from insurance co. after hit & run accident

Some idiot backed-into my car in my work parking lot and hit the road, no note or anything. So i had the work cops, regular cops check it out, etc. BAsically needs new fender, paint, new clear bra.

Adjuster from my insurance co. (USAA) comes out to get the estimate, all repairs are arranged, etc.

I get a call today from USAA asking me "what are the red things in the engine bay", "you have an scca plate, do you race..."

The adjuster apparently took pictures of my scca specialty plate, and engine bay.

I was sort of angry about this. I told the guy thats how the engine comes stock, and I'm an scca member but dont race, road or autocross, I just get the newsletters, magazine, go to local events.

I am considering calling USAA back and complaining about this. Your thoughts? I mean do they think I am lying to them... jesus.

I hate this "assumption" crap so much, just based on the car and the way it is. I wouldnt call and complain, i think it would be just a waste of you time

do you really not track your car, or have aftermarket parts? If you don't then maybe call them (they may say "come on in so we can inspect your car"). If you do but don't want them to know then I wouldn't press the point. Its crappy that they'd think about dropping you for having a couple mods or enjoying your car on the track but I guess it's in their interest ($$$$).

You got backed into, to do a proper estimate he needed pics of the front end (inside and out), he needed a picture of your car with your license plate, and he wanted to chit-chat. What's the big deal?

^^You're right as far as the pics go, that is not a problem as most insurance companies will request pics for an accident. The questioning about the parts and SCCA is BS.

Also insurance companies dont call to chit chat. Underwriting is always doing investigations. If you slip up and tell someone you live in NYC but are insured in PA somewhere. That info goes straight to underwriting and they investigate you. It sounds to me that they are digging for information.

By "red things", what did they mean? The exhaust manifold?

Yep, the stock mani.

The minute I had opened the hood the estimator was like "whaaadddyyaaaa got in heeeerre..." I was like the stock motor bro....

So the guy (?) from USAA who called was like "So you're in the scca? I know some guys like to join that so they can drive 100 mph, and race and stuff"

Be careful with this one. I had a Miata with a supercharger in it as well as a roll bar (for obvious sefety reasons being a convertable) and an exhaust among other thing and got my insurance cancelled by Nationwide. They didn't even use the blower as an excuse. They told me they cancelled it due to the rollbar altering the factory crash specifications. Total BS but they also said they couldn't insure a car that was modified for racing. Apparently some KYB shocks, a rollbar, and a subminiature blower to put out 180hp up from 120 means a car is a full out racecar.

..And the sad part is an insurance company can insure you or not insure you for any reason they want. This with the exception of the "risk pool" people which are typically assigned to an insurance company.

There is a lot more that goes into it than that, but this is just a quick summary.

Well I dont think Im gonna call and complain, just ticked-off. I dont want to step on anyone's toes there. I have insurance with USAA, grandfather'd-in b/c my dad was in federal law enforcement (Im not in the military).

They are probably the best insurance company in the country. Never had other problems. I did get sandwiched on the turnpike last year, again, not my fault, so i guess i'm on their radar. I got quotes from other companies, and no one could come close to the price/policy coverages that USAA gives me. Plus, it should be getting better b/c im getting married and will turn 30 in march. It just sux you get into a legitimate hit&run b/c of some other idiot, and its a permanent ding on your record, and then just b/c they see an scca plate and a red colored mani the bells & whistles go off.
