Default I Hate Insurance Companies

I'm going to be 23. I'm a single Male driver. No Accidents, No tickets, No traffic violations of any kind. I've had my own insurance policy since I was 16, and I excellent credit. I also made the Dean's List every semester at college and have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering. Not to mention, I took a defensive driving course when I was 16.

So I currently own a 94 Mitsubishi 3000gt vr-4. I also owned a 99 Impreza 2.5rs at the time, and was paying about $750 a year through Geico for just liability.

I bought an 05 STI w/ 9,500 miles. My Geico Insrance went up to $1550 with Full Coverage on the STI, $500 deductables.

Then I sold my 2.5RS, and removed it from my Geico policy. It shot up to $2200 a year! I called them up, the lady on the phone said there must be some mistake and looked into it for me. 10 minutes later she said there was nothing she could do.

So I spent all night getting quotes and switched to travelors. They quoted me $1400 which wasn't too bad. I got a voicemail on my phone and a letter in the mail asking me to call them. So I did. I asked them what it was about, and the lady said that when I signed up I requested more information about Renter's Insurance. I told her I was not interested at that time.

A week later I get another voicemail asking me to call. So I did, and they said they were about ready to cancel my policy because I never responded! She asked me a bunch of questions about my roomates.I have 2 roomates now, and we rent a full House. They both have their own vehicles (07 4x4 chevy, and another 05 STI). They also both have there own insurance.

Travellers Insrance wanted me to fax them in proof of insurance for my roomates. So I did. They said my rates were going up $300 until I could prove that they had their own insurance.

So I got my bill, and my 6 month premium went up $150. I called them up immediately. They said they received my fax but forgot to make the change in their system. So they made the change, and said it went down $100 a year. So apparently because I have 2 roomates who even have their own insurance, mine goes up $200. This makes no sense. I've asked everyone I know. No other insurance companies even care who your roomates are. It shouldn't affect my rates.

It's no different then having a roomate at college, or a friend come over. And neither of them have ever driven my car anyways.

So far it looks like Travelers is the cheapest but I'm determined to find something better. Anyone got any ideas? Anyone an insurance broker

Thanks - Charlie

You should've never said a word about ANY roomates. Your situation also applies to parents with teens, even if they dont have a license, the possibility of someone else using the car is a high risk to the insurance comp. Sucks, maybe you should shop around more. $2200 a yr is close to what im paying anyway @ 22yrs old.

This is why I like my insurance company (state farm)..... If they every try to dick me around, I can just go down to their office an put them in their place. Luckly, I've never had to do that and they have always gave me the best rates around.

Hmm, wish I knew more about how they rate people and what goes into it. The only thing I can suggest is to shop around more.

Did you try Progressive? They were the cheapest for me. I always take a bunch of flack from people because I work for State Farm. Ah well, when I have some more cash and a house I will look into insurance with someone else.

But on that note, I would raise hell about the rates increasing for your roommates. Try excluding your roommates on your policy. Basically that means that they can not drive your car and if they do, they will not be covered under your policy. May help your rates to come down.

Hope things work out for you.

Nope, not true. Most, if not all insurance companies, care who you live with. Each person in the house is the most likely person to also drive the car, with permission or without. My insurance company acutally requries you to disclose everybody living with you, and then for the best rate, you have to sign a waiver stating that THOSE drivers are exempt from coverage. If the car is involved in an accident and they were driving, you're on your own.
