Having prior insurance is a huge factor in pricing as there is no history for the insurance company to base their risk on. Definitely get a policy with your parents and after you have at least 12 mos you can start shopping around. Make sure you have proper coverage and sit and talk with your agent. Here's an example as to why.

I could give you full coverage of 30/60/10 meaning 30K for 1 person for liability per accident, 60K for liability for all parties per accident, and 10K for personal property. Yes, it's FULL coverage. You hit a Lexus worth $25K and you owe them $15K out of your pocket. Yes, it does happen which is why I refuse to give anyone less than 100/300/50.
My old ins co took this kid who hit my STI to court over $1800, won the judgement in Aug and I got my deductible back in Nov of '07. If they do that, they'll definitely come after your for more than $1800. Make sure you are properly insured.

Depends upon the insurance company. They'll determine their own risk. Some go by coupe vs sedan and some go by model as in WRX vs RS. I know my STI is just a tad higher than my wifes Forester with my current ins and with my last ins it was double.

Check with a couple of different insurance brokers as they can do the shopping for you.

"Turbo" (which is what they'll read when they look up the WRX model) is one of the most expensive words to an insurance company unfortunately.

well the fact that you are 18 really hurts you and the fact that it is NJ, which has one of the highest ranked in auto thefts in the nation... there are at least 2 posts on this site that I seen of STIs being stolen in NJ.

Good luck getting a good rate. Your a high risk driver being only on the road for maybe two years. And according to my insurance company, its in a sports car class. Good luck with that! I am 19 and my insurance is still insane (no accidents, tickets and good student discount)!
