My Geico insurance just jumped $40/month from ~$120 up to $161.

I called Geico and the customer service guy said the “rating” for my car ('07 STi) went from an "M" to a "Z" as a result of being reclassified (whatever that means). He explained that the rating was something to do with the cost of repairs from getting hit or hitting another vehicle.

Anybody else experienced this BS?

There are a few variables that would increase your insurance. I work for an insurance company and I can tell you for a fact that our cars were designated a poor rating from an insurance perspective. What this means is YES our cars are safe, and YES they made Consumer Reports safest cars to drive for its class. However, over the next several years our car and others are taking a hike in insurance. The reason is because of where the battery is placed in our cars. If you are to ever get into a serious front end accident your battery could potentially explode and spray acid over your entire engine. POOR DESIGN. A lot of cars do this. Not to say this is the only reason, like I said there are a lot of variables such as age and record. However, this is a big reason why your rates went up with no changes in your record... This information I gathered came from a place w/n my company that analyzes designs of cars before they hit production and make suggestions on how to engineer cars for cheaper claims.

Just my 2 cents.

I thought Geico lowered their rates in Colorado. Got something in the mail about that.

On a side note:
I'm also in Boulder with an 07 UGM STI. Are you going to any meets soon? I've been wanting to see the Grillcraft in person.

mine went up a slight bit, like $50 over 6 months. Don't know why though. I even passed the magical 25 mark.

I am 34 years old and have no tickets or accidents but Geico wanted $2800yr for the insurance of my 05 sti here in NYC. I called to see if it was a mistake but they said the car was reclassified this year because of the amount of claims made with this model. I switched to Progressive and now it's $1200yr. Hard to believe!! I had Geico for over 10 years!!

Well my Esurance policy just renewed and it went up $150/6mo. I just got off the phone with them and the guy on the phone explained that ALL Esurance policies for PA had increased premiums after Feb 21, 2008 due to Esurance having to pay out more of a percentage than what they're taking in. Esurance apparently went to the State and was allowed to increase rates for the state of PA.

So if anyone has Esurance and lives in PA, that's why your rates went up.
