I'm in the process of looking for amps and have a question. I'll be powering a sub rated for 500 watts rms and door speakers rated for 90 watts rms(front) and 60 watts rms(rear). I'll probably buy a mono or 2-ch amp for the sub and a 4-ch for the doors. How powerful should my amps be? Should I shoot for something that puts out similar watts rms, more or less?
Any recommendations for decent amps, that aren't too expensive, would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Within reason, what the speakers are rated for is almost irrelevant. What are your goals?? How loud do you like your music???

If you want to listen moderately loud but want decent headroom for good dynamics. Go with something that is rated 75 wpc or more from a quality company.

I went with a JL 300/4 and am very happy. You could rig it up to your front speakers, drive the rears off the head unit and run the sub off the other 2 chanels off the JL bridged.

its generally better to have an amp that can put out a little more RMS Wattage than the speakers can handle. So since ur speakers handle 90W RMS, you can get an amp that will put out 100W RMS each channel.

I just bought a Phoenix Gold Tantrum T600.4 which puts out 75W x 4 RMS to power my Focal 165V Slims which handle 60W RMS and 120 W Max.

Agree completely with Chiznarles - I should have been more specific. You don'twant to be at the botom edge of recommended power. I'm very happy with 75 w RMS x 4 from my JL audio. Remember also, our cars are loud. You need power to raise the level above the ambient noise.
