I've been looking around and finally found exactly what I wanted. I'm a big fan of MiniDisc and I've been using them since they came out (~12yrs ago), but I didn't want to alienate my friends with CD-only collections. So I picked up a Blaupunkt New Orleans MD head unit with changer control at Crutchfield.com for $200, and then went over to Sounddomain.com and grabbed the Blaupunkt CDC-A09 5-disc in-dash CD Changer for $180. Now I'll have Minidisc and CD, both in-dash, and it was only $400 shipped.
Haven't decided on speakers yet; I'll prolly wait until the car comes out and I can verify the mounting whole sizes and whatnot. I'll most likely end up with an A/D/S 6.5" & 1" Compnent set in the front and A/D/S Coaxial 5.25" in the back... I can get all of those with crossovers for another $400.
Then I can throw my Phoenix Gold 4-channel amp somewhere if I want, and maybe do a custom Sub enclosure in the spare wheel well or something.
That reminds me - Anyone know if the rear seats fold down?

Went with:

Alpine HU 9813
Front Doors - MB Quart RCE213's - components
Rear Doors - Boston Accoustic Co-ax NX57's

Didn't want the subwoofers at this point so I went with the 9813 since I didn't need as much detailed bass control.

Hopefully sounds great. Think I should go with the dynomat sound buffer in the doors?

I went with the Alpine 9815 (gotta have MP3s) and Infinity Kappa 60.5cs Components in the front. Not to tough a job to install the speakers, just a pain in the ass. Sounds great but I think I am going to need some bass punch. We'll see. I am debating on rear fill speakers.

I ended up getting

Nakamichi
Dynaudio
Helix
Elemental Design

in my system... it was the first aftermarket system that i have put in my car, so I thought to get it done well.

chawklit, I agree with you about the headphones, I'm finding that I compare my system with my headphones & headphone amp combo, and for the most part the car system is still not quite up to par with my headphones.. *sigh* too bad you can't wear headphones in the car.

From my current car:

Pioneer media, either the AVH-P6500DVD or the DEH-P940MP I have laying around
Pioneer 6-disc changer
Diamond Audio 4 channel and monoblock amps
Diamond Audio 6.5" components up front
Diamond Audio 5.25" components in the rear doors (if easily done)
Diamond Audio 10" sub in trunk with lightweight fiberglass enclosure

The DA rear components and sub I'd buy for the STi. . . as I don't want to put my two DA 12" subs and HEAVY sealed box in there from my Civic.

Of course the Monster Cable interconnects and capaciters will also migrate over, although I'm sure I'll conceal them rather than opulently display them, again.

Only question with the video is, do I mount the DVD head unit in the DIN opening and sacrifice the upper cup holder (small sacrifice) or mount it where the Defi gauge cluster normally sits (which I want, but won't block anything when open). For these reasons, I MAY just stick the 940MP deck in there for audio only. God, I love both decks, though. Hard decision. :P

I'm all about superb sound quality, but I will not sacrifice the weight characteristics of the car to achieve it.

I stopped by a shop my buddy recommended on Saturday. I'm still up in the air on the HU. But here's what the shop recommended:

Alpine CDA9811 (328.00)
Alpine MRD M500 (399.00) [mono amp for sub]
Alpine MRV F340 (314.00) [4 channel amp]
MB Quart PSC216 6.5 Component in front doors (282.00)
Alpine SPS130A 5.25 Coax in rear doors (89.99)
Alpine SWR-1021D Sub (132.00)

Custom false wall behind rear seatback with amp rack and concealing sub enclosure. The wall will extend about 12" back from the seat back.

The total estimate including all parts, tax, and labor is $2561.89.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

The Alpine 9811 is a good hu but I think the 9813 and even better the 9815 for more control of the subwoofer. Gotta tweak 'em.

I went with:

Head Unit: Pioneer AVH-P7500DVD
Front: Jl Audio XR-650CSI
Rear: JL Audio XR-525CXI
Subs: JL Audio 12W3 V2
Amps (3): JL Audio 300/4 for components and coaaxials
JL Audio 250/1 for each sub

I haven't yet decided on the 6 disk CD changer or DVD changer.
The subs are mounted in a custom box and the amps are mounted in a cutom covered amp rack with neons, fiberglass, acrylic and plexiglass. I will post picks when completed. It should all be done by the end of this week.

Jim
