Default Infinity vs Pioneer

Infinity Reference 4022i or Pioneer A door speakers, which to get? I want more bass without having to run an amp. $200 budget

I personally went with Polk audio db6500. They sound great w/o an additional amp. Have you gotten rid of your OEM speakers?

I had to cut where I circled b/c it wouldn't allow the trim panel to clip back onto the door. No big deal, easy to do with a razor blade.

I forgot to add that you have to cut out the center of the OE speaker so you can place the new 1 on top. I used a dremel. With out the OE speaker used as a spacer, the sound is terrible. It made a huge difference with them. I don't know if using an A/M spacer would sound just as good. I don't think they would come close since these fit perfectly of course.

Between the two, DEFINITELY go with the pioneer A series. I just recommended them in another thread and they are by far the more bass heavy speaker over the infinity. Infinity's speakers hold their strengths in the quality of their high's and mid tones.

I'm a pioneer fan but for speakers, Infinity has better quality of sound in IMO.

LOL... 3 way coax...

and of course bass is gonna suck on a 4".... simple physics. Cone area x excursion = bass (ok oversimplified but you get the idea)

Low frequency reproduction is similar to that old muscle car saying...

"there's no replacement for displacement"

Depending on brand, a 4" speaker is going to be worthless under 100-150Hz... I'd strongly recommend capping them off (electronically or with inline capacitors) at around 120 Hz or so since they'll just fart at lower frequencies.

If you're adding 4" speakers to the rear for low frequency reinforcement, you're going to be disappointed. Good amplified front speakers, underseat subs, or a trunk mounted sub are the route you wanna follow.

Consider the kenwood underseat sub or the infinity basslink.... either for under $250 and will fit your requirement a lot better than 4" speakers in the rear.

I am leaning toward the infinity myself, I am not looking for earth shattering bass in a sub, just something noticeably better than stock

Common misconception....

You don't add subs for "ear shattering bass"...

But thanks to all of the low grade morons running around with 15"s and wattage ratings in the k-watts the conclusion is that subs are for LOUD.

Not so.

What I am telling you is...

The original post inquired about adding 4" speakers in the hopes of reinforcing a little bit of low end into the system. If that is the end result you want then adding a couple of speakers that at best will reinforce the midrange response of your system is almost certainly going to fail to fulfill those goals.

I'm not trying to be an @-hole, but based on what was mentioned, you're throwing your money away on either of those choices.

If you really want to help low freqency response to the system, I would at the very least modify the rear doors to take a 5 1/4" or a 6" speaker if a dedicated sub is out of the question.

Sorry if that's not the answer you want to hear, but I've worked in the audio install industry for years, and now as a hobby take it to a much higher level than your run of the mill car audiophile. I'd much rather see you get some results from your investment rather than just throw a couple of speakers in the stock holes and come away unhappy.
