Looks like I've stumped them. Perhaps they are going and trying to press the buttons as I documented to them on an 8120 themselves?
So I emailed "Kay H" when I didn't hear from Kenwood within the two business days they promised... and they responded:

Sounds like this is confirmation that they have a bug. Don't they QA their head units before releasing them?

I haven't had any complaints or problems with the mic mounted on the A-pillar.
Most people say it's clear and loud.

Alright thanks. I will have them move it Tuesday and see how well it does. Where on the A pillar is it exactly? Is it level with your face or is it at the top where the pillar starts?

I also had to drop mine back into the dash a bit. Rounded out the mounting holes on the factory brackets and got everything to line up a lot better. Looked like about 5mm. I also had some minor issues with the bottom of the radio face rubbing on the dash fascia (04' STi) so I clipped the nubs used to line up the radio bracket in the dashboard an just pushed the radio up while bolting the deck into the dash. That got me the 1mm or so I needed so the face would clear.

I mounted mine near the top of the A Pillar - have to watch out for clearance of the sun visor though. I kinda wish that I could mount the "clip" part behind the plastic of the A-pillar though so that the only thing you see if the mic itself.

So far it's been working great there.

can you be a little more specific? Do you mean just the DNX8120 itself (fitment)? It should mount just fine into any double DIN space. I had to play with the brackets to get it to sit more "flush" with the surrounding plastic fascia, but that was relatively easy to do.

mine is in an 06. It sticks out a bit but I got used to it. It is that way since the screen tilts so far each way.

I moved the mic today and have the clip behind the pillar somewhat. Person I called said it sounds much better. . Thanks for the advice guys.

Thanks for the informative post, convinced me to go out and pick up the 5120 that I've been looking at... and to tackle the install myself

Please be aware with the 5120 that if you have any plans to expand beyond a deck and four speakers, it does NOT have dedicated subwoofer outputs.

People still say that they can't hear me on my 8120...

Mike is on the A-pillar, near the top, pointed at me... Maybe it's my iPhone.. Wait, no that could NEVER be the problem.

I have mine on the A-pillar, but near the bottom (near the tweeter).

Of course the tweeter isn't a problem because the bluetooth works best if you configure it to use the speaker on the front right-hand side. I found this was best to prevent the caller from hearing echos...

I was actually planning on initially installing the 5120, then down the road adding a 4 channel amp to drive a set of components up front and bridging 2 channels to drive a 10" in the trunk. I was planning on just leaving the stock rears to run off the deck but fading them out unless someone was sitting in back.

Could someone chime in and let me know if this is a reasonable approach?

Thanks!

An update -- Kenwood told me how to do this and it works. Turns out you need a file on the USB stick. More here: Kenwood head unit 08 wallpaper

PM me if you want this file.

Rear preouts will fade with the speaker outputs from the deck... in other words, you won't be able to seperately fade the rear speakers and the bridged channel used for the subs... at least not from the deck. You could use the amp to make gain adjustments, but that really isn't an ideal way to do it.
