Default radar in southern california

I was just wondering how many of you actually find a radar detector useful in southern california. I mean I have an x50 and most of the time on the freeway I will see cops but they don't have their radar on. I mean the radar would be great if they are just sitting there and waiting to radar me, but can't they just pace or use their visual judgement to pull me over. I don't mean to come off saying I want to buy a radar detector so I can speed and not take any responsibility for my actions, I am just looking to see if you really notice your detector helping you in normal driving. I am thinking to upgrading to a valentine 1 as my x50 seems to be getting more and more false alerts, but I am trying to see if anyone locally really finds it useful.

I find it extremely useful at times, but have also been paced before. I know what you mean but seeing cops w/o radar on.

But, radar detectors are useful tools, but your best defense are your eyes and brain.

Hmm wow. FLAMESUIT ON! A V1 is not really un upgrade over an X50 IMHO. V1's are nice and all, but I have never really read anything that would put one over the other. I have been using an X50 everyday down here in SoCal for going on two years. From what I have seen it is very effective. Most CHP units use Ka band, whether they are moving or not. Local City cops here never seem to set speed traps, but they use Ka as well when moving. I have never seen laser down here. When I went to Washington State last year I noticed almost all the WSP cars were using laser, and the X50 doesn't pick it up so well, when it is mounted high on the windshield, at least. That made me a little nervous, but I have yet to see a laser unit in use down here. BTW I don't really speed that often, I just like to know where the police officers are located when I am driving. and I visual scan everywhere, that is how I noticed the DOZENS of laser units in use in Washington. BTW I have not recieved a ticket since owning my X50, knock on wood.

i went from a x50 to a v1 which i currently have and have not noticed any less false alarms with the v1. that being said i do like the hidden display and the arrow indicators of the v1 without those the x50 in my opinion is just as good. Ka is all i have ever seen in socal. the v1 comes in handy mostly on freeway cruising and finding up ahead sitting cops and cops hiding on freeway on ramps good luck either one you cant go wrong under normal driving conditions my v1 doesnt help me at all, its when you want to cruise 80 on the freeway and need a little extra protection

Cool, I figured that it was possibly a malfunctioning of my x50 to not notice cops. I guess they just don't use radar too much around here. I don't speed much either as it doesn't save me too much time going from 65-80. But, it would be nice to be able to cruise with the flow of traffic down here I guess I will stick with my x50 for now. I was just hoping that the valentine would be the panacea I hear about.

IMO, the v1 is superior in just about every way to the x50. The arrows, sensitivity, manual mute feature, mute volume, appearance, three sensitivity modes, etc. I will switch to one very soon.

Not to mention that Passport customer service is the worst in the buisness

I knew this would happen in here. There is always someone stating very emphatically that the V1 is the best. They never have any impartial testing data to back up their claim though. V1 vs. X50 is kinda like STi vs. Evo. There really is no clear winner. It all comes down to personal preference. Lots of people like both. No reason to come in spouting off about how one is so much better because it has arrows or what not. Oh BTW X50 has expert mode, to track multiple bogies at once, which V1 does not have. So I guess that kinda cancels out the arrows, huh?

I never said that I had specific impartial data to back up why I believe the v1 is superior. Also, I have had numerous problems with my x50 in the past, and wanted to let my fellow members (you included) that the customer service of that company really does suck...

Also, I clearly started my post with IMO which means "in my opinion" so in reality I wasn't "spouting off," just simply stating my opinion. The OP wanted member's opinions, and that is what I gave. So no need to flame me..

Fair enough. There was no real flame intended. Just seems the X50 guys get a bad rap in here is all. Also he didn't ask for peoples opinions on what was better, he asked if people had detectors, and if they found them useful.

Yea sorry for bringing another x50 vs v1 battle. I just wanted to know whether or not you guys found them worth their prices. I appreciate all of your help!

they are definitely worth their prices.

The money that I have saved from not getting tickets because of my detector greatly outweighs the price of the unit.

And I don't speed much, so it would be even more worth it if you speed on a regular basis.

I just wish I could test my x50 without having to pay a quarter of its price. I mean I could live with the falses except it has honestly only save me once, but never on the freeway. Does valentine have like a month return policy? More research time haha.

Haha, gracias.

Having owned a passport and currently own the V1 I can handsdown say the V1 is better in every way, not only in terms of product quality but also in terms of customer service.
